IOWA STATE and PERFECT GAME

The third quarter of Baylor and half of the Tech game were as close to perfect as we'll see.

Defensively as much as you can ask with zero first downs allowed. Offensively scored TDs on each possession. Special teams had a long kick return but the muffed punt set up a Baylor FG. Definitely close to perfect. Without that muffed punt it might have been considered a nearly perfect quarter.

ISU is having success as a team that grinds. It's tough to play a perfect game when the team doesn't have elite talent to dominate the lines of scrimmage.

Also, while our 3-3-5 defense is highly effective, it doesn't seem to create a lot of turnovers which creates easy points for the offense.

On offense we don't have a quick strike offense. Breece is our best chance at 40+ yard gains.

Because of our offense and defensive schemes, we limit possessions and potential for that perfect 50-10 game.

As others have stated, each definition of 'perfect' varies. In terms of "attainable perfection", the following would be an ideal game, in my mind:
  1. Offense
    1. No 3-and-outs
    2. No Turnovers
    3. Points every time we cross the 50 into the opposing teams half of the field
      1. Much loftier, but still 'attainable'
  2. Defense
    1. No Big Plays - lets say anything over 30+ yards
      1. Seem to be giving up big plays at key moments during the game
    2. 1+ takeaway(s)
    3. 3rd Down conversion rate below 30%
    4. Multiple sacks/QB hurries
  3. Special Teams
    1. No Points allowed during kick-offs, field goals, or punt returns
We've witnessed all of those phases through small stretches in each game. A complete game that resulted in each of the above would by my perfect game.

I have been a ISU FAN ( and an Alum) for many years.

I watch this years team and have to wonder.... What will happen when we play a perfect game? Offense, Defense, Special Teams, Coaching clock management what would happen??

Where will it happen? Hopefully, in Arlington, Texas!

Forgot about the muffed punt in that quarter.

I think we could get close to a perfect game with better offensive play calling. I think that Manning does a pretty good job in a lot of games but could always be better. There are some plays that you see NFL and college teams run every game that have a high success rate, but you never see ISU run these plays. Bootlegs, for example, are rare to see from ISU. Why? With teams paying extra attention to Breece, the bootleg would be a great play on 3rd and short situations. Throwing to the chains on 3rd downs would be nice too. And, of course, more attention to special teams would be huge.

One thing to point out is that ISU had just 1 penalty for yards against Baylor. That was great to see.

Hey @cykick, can you make a similar thread for next week?

Wasn't perfect. First kickoff went out of bounds... can we PLEASE hire a special teams coach?? If not the entire staff needs to go.

Also our 2nd string should have easily scored two scores against KState today. Manning seat is seriously getting warm at this point.

And don't even get me started on Defense, allowing 33% on 3rd down to THAT team. Campbell should seriously have a conversation with Heacock about is adjustments.

I'm tooting my own horn. I think we damn near accomplished everything listed above against KState.
