***Iowa Pregame Thread***

In the early 80s, the university used to have the skydivers land at midfield. That ended after one got caught in a wind tunnel and crashed on the field seriously injured the skydiver. The press box went very quiet as it happened right in front of them.
I witnessed that horrifying event.

Not a huge Portnoy fan but this is exactly how you endear yourself to a fanbase. The dude is an expert at social media and generating buzz.
I heard he was considering wearing a Caitlin Clark jersey on Saturday. Here's a thought...How about a Haliburton jersey instead homie? Or maybe a Purdy.

Is Ferentz really gonna run his QB all year until he is carried off in a stretcher or can Gronowski hold up? He does not seem to move well side to side at all.

I watched a replay of the Iowa game from last season. We usually play pretty fundamentally sound, but even in that game, we were losing our minds.

  • Hufford with some early penalties
  • Delay of game penalty when punting deep in our own territory
  • Jayden Higgins touchdown catch had to be ripped away from the defender to avoid the interception. Rocco threw it to the inside the receiver instead of outside.
  • Carson Hansen fumbled (luckily out of bounds)
  • Tipped pass that was almost intercepted
  • Perkins bobbled at least one of the long snaps when punting
  • Iowa almost housed the last kick return (not good kick coverage)
That last point, why we just kicked off and allowed a regular return made no sense. Even a kick out of bounds would have been better, but a squib kick away from Wetjen they would have just fallen on or picked up and run out the clock. There are times when all of us probably think, "Hey, pay me $1 million and I will give you a better play!"

literally no one thinks like this anymore. Maybe some did back in the early 2000s. But Iowa State is on a whole different level nowadays. Past 5 years Iowa State has been a better program than Iowa has.

I don’t doubt that this may have been true in the early McCarney days. We weren’t winning many games and that first hurdle was the way to build the program. Now, the Big12 title is the next hurdle. Iowa has no impact on that.

I thought ISU did a great job stopping the run after the score was 19-7. Kaleb had a couple big runs that inflated his stats, but Iowa couldn't sustain a drive at all the final 1.5 quarters. Here were Iowa drives after the score was 19-7 with 4:47 left in the 3rd quarter

3 plays, 3 yards
3 plays, -2 yards
3 plays, 0 yards
7 plays, 14 yards (2 first downs)
6 plays, 8 yards (1 first down)

Summary
5 drives for 3 first downs and 23 yards.
and we do not have a couple of those D-linemen including JR Singleton who had a big game. I do worry about them beating us 3-4 yards at a time with their run game and hitting on a big one, they also go for the big play at some point during this game.
