Iowa NIL Update

Wanted to share some of what I’ve put together on Iowa NIL from various sources since there is a lot of talk about what we might be up against.

From what I’ve heard – Iowa could pull together roughly $5-6 mil for NIL right now between their various channels. That’s expected to increase another $5-7 mil in the next 12-18 months as they realign where donors direct money. There are some that believe they could get to $20 mil by 2025 as the new media contract allows further realignment of funds.

While $10-12 mil/year wouldn’t put them in the same category as the elite NIL schools (Bama, Georgia, USC, tOSU, Michigan, TN, Miami, A&M, Oregon, Florida, Texas, Nebraska, etc), it would put them in the Top 30. If they got to $20 mil, they’d be closer to 15-20th.

Just want to point out that Michigan doesn’t really do NIL, didn’t know Nebraska had much of a fund either.
 
Unfortunately, we knew this would be the case with the Big10 and SEC. Their media dollars will be able to fund their annual athletic department budget without much donations; maybe some donations for capital improvement projects. So the rest of those donation dollars will go to NIL efforts.

This difference will be what creates the P2 vs everyone else.

We just need lots of people to chip in a little bit. That's the only way this works for us. We don't have a ton of big donors.

Honestly what Pollard and our coaching staffs have built at ISU is pretty amazing considering the resource disadvantage we are at.

Hadn't thought about this. Big Ten ADs can tell their big donors to send checks to the NIL collective instead now because the TV money will be more than enough for the AD budget. Now their NIL collectives can balloon because of FOX, NBC, and CBS money. Sometimes I think I would be happier if I was just an NFL fan where there is fairness and parity!

It is depressing how far down the totem pole Iowa State is in terms of offering programs that can be leveraged into high paying careers. Iowa has a lot of the same programs ISU offers, plus the med school and law school. How is that fair? I get that we live in a state that is somewhat sparsely populated with 2 large public university's and a 3rd smaller one, and only so many programs can be offered and only so many students to attend. But still, frustrating that Iowa gets to have the healthier side of the imbalance.

You get 10,000 people just to chip in 10-20 bucks a month and you have 2million or so. Then have the bigger donors throw their weight and you could climb up to 5MM. Which puts us still considerably behind, but hopefully at least allows us to hold some players and not have floodgates out for all the good players we develop.

We need an engineer alum to build a time machine, go back to 1858, and insist that Iowa State create schools that produce alumni with high-paying jobs so that they can donate to NIL programs in 2022.

Part of the problem also stems from we do have grads who make good money, but their professions also have a tendency to make them cheaper also. Engineers, farmers, Vets, and such typically aren't big donors until later if life, if they are. Whereas lawyers, dentists and doctors seem to be better donors. We do have a few that are pre-med and it would probably be good if we found a way to partner with DM university and have a pre-med program set up to increase your likelihood of acceptance to them.

That’s what I’d like to know also. How much does Iowa State have or an approximate amount? And is Iowa State encouraging donors to move more towards the Collective with their donations like Iowa and some other schools?

It doesn't work. We have to hope we can keep up in recruiting without big NIL deals.

It's crazy that we can consistently get 60k to a football game but can't seem to get a good chunk of those people to chip in $10 a month. If you could get 20k people doing that you have a solid foundation. That doesn't even include alumni around the country that can't get to games but still watch a lot.
