Iowa buys firekirkferentz.com and firegarybarta.com

I am in no way defending the Suckeyes, but they were burnt by this once before (firestevealford.com) so they are covering all their bases. Companies do this stuff all the time....

This is a brilliant fund-raiser for the Hawkeyes. As the football program and athletic department in general continues to falter, the demand from irate Hawk fans for those domain names will increase. Eventually U of I can offer the domain names to the highest bidder, making a nice profit in the process. Why not profit from what you're good at. In this case: Losing.

Jim Rome just talked about this on his Final Burn on ESPN. Included a phrase like "Instead of buying up these domain names, you should start worrying about recent losses to the like of Northwestern and Iowa State"

Nice burn by Rome, but i guess we know where he stands on the cyclones.... :-)

If anyone just saw Jim Rome is Burning, Jim just slammed Iowa on this issue. He said they should worry more about losses to Northwestern and ISU than whether people talk about their coaches.

It looks like the press from this has only spurred others to buy up sites like fireferentz.com and fire-kirk-ferentz.com

This blog post has links to the Rag, Gazette, and AP stories on it. The comments in the Rag are pretty funny. And Hlas's column really nails their idiotic paranoia.

ISU seems to be taking the rational route.
"We haven't even discussed such a measure," Cyclones senior associate athletics director Steve Malchow said. "If someone really wanted to do something like this, I presume they could come up with other domain names."
It's hilarious to me that in their attempt to put out a campfire that wasn't even lit yet (and they would have no hope of containing if someone did want to light it) they've managed to set the forest on fire. Way to go, Iowa!

Funny stuff.

I guess I'd never think of:
firecoachferentz.com
or
firecoachbluder.com

Those darn hawkeye, got all their bases covered.:laugh8kb:

I completely understand why the university wants to quell any negativity from their fanbase. The problem is that their programs have struggled the past couple years, and people are worried that the slide is irreversible.

I don't even think that the enthusiasm that Iowa State fans seem to have about their programs is much of the problem. I think that for three years the football team got every break they possibly could, from the drive against Purdue in 2002 to Warren Holloway's catch against LSU, the ball bounced their way every time. Because of this, I think that Ferentz's esteem was perhaps overstated. He is a very good coach, no doubt, but I wouldn't put him in the same category as a Pete Carroll. Those things (the breaks) even themselves out eventually, and now most of the bounces are going against them, and there is some tarnish on Ferentz now.

But the Hawk fans, who were spoiled for those 3-4 years, are now seeing that there is a level between them and OSU, and Michigan, and possibly even Wisconsin. Then you look at the way that Zook is recruiting, and that has to worry the fans of teams in the Big 10. These people are spending a lot of money on the program, and are looking for a return on their investment. Then, you add in the money that Kirk is making, and 13-12 is not acceptable.

This next two years has been built up in their fans minds for years now, with no OSU or Michigan. And if they struggle next year, there is no doubt that Ferentz will be under a microscope.

I did some research on firegenechizik.com and found that the domain is owned by a company that purchases domains to prevent cyber-squatting.

I bought the other extensions to my firm's domain to prevent or alleviate squatting and redirection.

At one time, there was a glorious Web site called Hawksuck.com. I still cry myself to sleep every night because it's no longer around.
