Don't have a problem with either quote. At this point they are an elite team in the nation, they're ranked in the top 20. He didn't say perennially elite.

On the one hand, you have to believe you're that good in order to get there.
On the other hand, you don't say that you're elite. You let other people say it.

To be fair, Iowa is a really solid team this year and I won't be surprised one bit if we lose. Don't know if I would call them ELITE but definitely a top 15 caliber team.

I think some people take anything regarding the hawkeyes too personally. Mable is giving typically responses to the question. There are 300 something NCAA teams. They are an elite team. So are we. So is the top 25. Heck, the top 40 are elite teams.

Friday is a big game but it certainly won't define the season for either group.

I disagree with part 1 and agree with part 2. Neither Iowa nor ISU are elite teams. Or at least they haven't proven themselves to be.

If ISU were to start a football season 5-1 I'm sure every Iowa fan would think it's perfectly fine for our players to call us an ELITE team. Sure.

Iowa hasn't won a conference championship in 34 years, they haven't made the tournament in nearly a decade, they haven't beat a ranked opponent opponent this year, Fred has done much more the past two years than they've done in the past decade, Wayne Morgan won more tournament games than their last two coaches combined. They can call themselves elite but then fans of other teams can laugh at that because it's funny, just like our football team calling themselves elite would be funny if they get off to a good start next season.
