I have the wrong job

I'm still amazed Dude Perfect and Rhett and Link are still so popular as they were 10+ years ago. I'm curious how long Rhett and Link are willing to do it since they're in they're 40s now and Dude Perfect is in their 30s.

I didn't know they still made videos, I remember watching them in my early years of high school

For every one YT or social media star that makes it, there’s a heap of failures a mile high. I looked into the maker/YT path a few years back. Tons and tons of work and at the end of the day, you’re at the mercy of an algorithm. You live your life for clicks. That way lies madness.
Sounds like a nightmare. Now that I'm in my forties fame of any kind sounds like one of the worst things imaginable. Definitely not for me.

Biggest example of this is the kid who made a 70 subscriber special about 2 years ago. He camped a half mile from his house in a cheap tent in a blizzard. That video now has 17 million views and his channel 600,000 subscribers.

The YouTube channel that I follow that has the biggest following is Off The Ranch, who has nearly 4 million followers. He is a vet in Texas who went to A&M and has a business in addition to his vet business called Bunker Branding, where they make T-shirts and a line of other clothing, a couple of different brands. Some of the clothes are T-shirts for other social media influencers (gawd how I hate that word).

One of the things he has been putting on his Off the Ranch channel is the abandoned mansion series, where he bought a mansion that was being built and suddenly abandoned 20 years ago before it was finished. It's on a knoll with a view for miles of the surrounding area. They are finishing the build, but really rebuilding a lot of it because it had been exposed to the weather for 20-plus years. I find those episodes fascinating. They are planning to move into the place when it's finished. Their plans for the place are spectacular. This guy must make several million dollars a year from just YouTube.

He has a couple of other YouTube channels as well, one for his vet practice and one called Demolition Ranch, where he shoots guns at stuff, blows stuff up and basically creates mayhem. That channel has over 8 million followers.

Demolition Ranch is that, that Hickock fellow? He's quite the good shot.

I've watched some of the videos out there of people with YT channels who break down how much they actually make and unless you hit it big with a great idea and following it's a damn hard way to make a living as your full time job. Like you said most people who try it usually fail. Some can probably make some decent supplemental income but even that can be time consuming with the recording and editing that goes into making videos and getting a following that makes it worth that time to keep posting new content.

You might like the guy that bought a ghost town and is running around and exploring and fixing it up a bit - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEjBDKfrqQI4TgzT9YLNT8g

The biggest name in the maker space is Jimmy Diresta. He has a podcast (Making It) with two other YT makers and they talk about their jobs. It sounds awful. You have to constantly be thinking of new content, recording, editing, repeat. Plus, they can’t just make stuff they want, they have to make stuff they think will make for good videos and get clicks.

The easiest way to money in that space is tool sponsorships. But that sounds even worse. You sign a contract with a minimum number of videos and views. If you don’t meet the agreed numbers, you don’t get paid. Plus the tool marketing people will force you to get X minutes of their logos in the shot. Like I said, it sounds awful and I can’t imagine these guys are making much more than $50-75k/yr.

I wanted to do it to gain “freedom” but these guys made it sound like just another form of work and not fun at all.

My son is an fgteev watcher on YouTube. They seem like a pretty wholesome family and don’t mind him watching it. I just looked on google and the first article says they’re estimated to be making 14k a day/ 4 million a year.

I’ve never really got into YouTube like a lot of people do. I don’t subscribe to anything but one video podcast and watch how to videos every once in awhile.

Well al least my job is not creating and selling advertising to 4-12 year olds on a 9 year olds YouTube.

That sounds pretty interesting, I'll have to check out his channel.
