Hunter Dekkers Concerns?

CMC and staff said even last year if Brock (one of the best ISU QBs of all time) were to go down, they weren't worried bc they had Dekkers to back him up.

I also think it is important that he has played in games (big games like at OU and vs Iowa)... if staff trusted him enough to put him in those situations last year, clearly they're fine w him this year.

This will tell you how old I am. I have watched Iowa State football for 53 years this coming season. Who does Hunter Dekkers resemble ? In my opinion, his style and throwing mechanics reminds me of Sonny Jurgensen.

My only concern is his OC, especially early in the year.

But if you really listened to the coaches in preseasons, you'd have believed going into last year we had our entire 3-deep OL as future NFL starters. How'd that turn out?

Was just going to same the same thing. I don't want Matt Campbell to hype up anyone preseason because all he could do last year was talk about how great the O-line was. And we all know how that turned out...:D

I just have to laugh at the “Purdy was such a heady player” and “Purdy was a great game manager” takes. He regressed in those regards. Thinking about an instance where he picked up an errant snap, threw the ball, got tipped up, Purdy caught it again, then fumbled or threw a pick. Maybe someone can refresh my memory from what game that was.

During that sequence it felt like I yelled “just fall on it” or “just go down” probably 20 times.
You know how in job interviews, when they ask you your biggest weakness, and you are supposed to give an answer that's a strength?

Interviewer: "Brock, what is your greatest weakness?"
Brock: "I NEVER give up on a play."

I will remember the wins much more than the turnovers. Hope he makes bank in the NFL.

He said we had 13 guys who could start in the Big12. They probably could have started at Kansas.

I think the biggest problem is all of our top OL mostly excelled at the same Guard position. They didn’t do as well out of position.

Agreed. My biggest want from the beginning of this season is to see a loose and aggressive offense that lets Hunter come out and get momentum going week 1 between him and the receivers. Let the passing game open up space for the running game.

I will not be holding my breath.

If there were any concerns at all, we would be hearing about a quarterback competition and more than likely the staff would have brought in a transfer to push Dekkers for the job. I think that speaks volumes.

I'm not even needing loose and aggressive; just looking fundamentally sound and well prepared like they just spent a month working on it.

Against a lesser opponent things should take care of themselves.

Any college quarterback is wait and see for me. I thought we had a bad deal back when Sage was named starter, thought we would suck because of him. Then he was awesome. Then got all pumped up about a couple other guys and they ended up sucking.

It's what happened after a play like that. Mistake free football. Some guys would let a bonehead play like that get to their head.

Even the best QBs make bonehead plays.

A shorter QB with a below average arm does not get drafted if they aren't elite mentally.

Myself I think he’s the real deal! Our new stud QB! Has a real good group of receivers to let that big arm go to! Go Cyclones!

Anything to solve the early season slow starts. What is up with that? I always get the impression CMC is rigidly sticking to a game-plan early on.

I imagine I'll catch flack for this post but wanted to ask anyways. I'm a bit nonplussed by CMC et al. comments on Dekkers. Anyone infer concern about Dekkers putting it all together? I haven't felt a lot of enthusiasm between Blum and Williams, or CMC, which I guess I wanted to see between the lines of coach speak. I feel like I'm used to hearing more buzz and excited optimism around a rising starting QB, especially with his potential. Obviously it's to be expected at this time of year- you have to see it on the field, so we are holding our collective breath. He has all the tools but how quickly can he reach his potential? yada yada.

Anyone else?
Hutchinson called him a one and done. Other players have sung his praises. Campbell always keeps his cards close to the vest.
