I think people are forgetting this. We had several long returns, including a TD due to the terrible line drive punts. This made the score more lopsided than it would have been. Our offense didn't exactly move up and down the field on them.

Wasn't our average starting field position near the 50 yard line in last year's game? The UNI punter was our MVP!

Is there a line on the game yet? I thought I saw ISU -7.5. If so, that's a line that thinks UNI is pretty solid.

Panther fan here, hoping to clear up a few things and give a little insight into the team this year.

The returning starters are a little different that a previous poster researched on us, we actually had a couple of key injuries for our playoff game against NDSU so I would list returning starters as followed.

QB: Aaron Bailey- We are excited for what he could do this year, in part because he is the man this year, Farley is notorious for having a wide open QB competition with no one getting a lot of snaps and no one really getting that much better, most fans feel that the terrible QB play was do to this last year and once Kollmogoren was done with concussions and Bailey was the clear starter we took off. He is a running QB, but looked a lot better passing at a practice scrimmage that I went to, and we hired Colin Klien as our QB coach. Backup is Eli Dunne out of Grinnell, who actually got a few snaps in last years game.

RB: Tyvis Smith- Bigger Faster and Stronger than David Johnson, but doesn't have the intangibles that made David so great. Still a very good running back, that I think most fans feel could be a 1500 yard guy this year.

RB/Slot- Michael Malloy- Michael was a nice piece of the offense when he got hurt last year, good pass catcher, but also was getting 5 to 10 carries a game. He will be involved in the game plan.

WR- Charles Brown and Daurice Fountain- Fountain is our best receiver and often sees double coverage Brown is a small receiver but lightning quick with track speed. After that Brandon Smith started a few games, but I believe he blew out his ACL and will miss the season. You may see a true freshman play at WR for us.

TE- Lost our 2 starting TE from last year, Elias Nissen played some in a backup role, but no real experience at TE for us.

OL- Robert Rathje, Trevor Hanson, Cal Twait, Bryce Sweeny- Rathje is our best lineman started since he was a freshman in 2013 and was injured the final 2 playoff games which really hurt us. Hason was a full time starter last year, and started on and off as a sophomore, Cal Twait started as a true freshman for us at LT before a knee injury, Bryce Sweeny will start at RT and was solid for us last year. Yes, Chris Schlueger did transfer to UAB, he was a part time starter for us.

DL- Karter Schult, Preston Woods, Adam Reth- These 3 are very good players, Schult was an All-American last year, Woods played as a true freshman, then had some health issues that spring and lost some major weight, got back about half way through the year and was a force for us. Reth missed the last two playoff games as well for us last year, great defensive lineman that has played a lot the last two years. I would suspect that you will also see Bryce Douglas who transferred from Illinois and came in way out of shape, redshirted and has looked really good, and Ezra Szczyrbak who played well at times last year. I am not sure about any of the young guys we have, but I do not that since Bryce Paup came back to be out DL coach our DL has been amazing, and he keeps bringing in better and better talent.

LB- Jared Farley and D'Shawn Dexter- These two are very good football players and will rack up the tackles, Farley is your prototypical MLB and run stopper, Dexter plays more of a hybrid LB/S and is very good in space, Dexter was out for the first half of the NDSU game because of a targeting and AJ Allen started in his place. We did lose Brett McMakin who declared early for the draft, although it has been speculated that there was some other reason for that, I am not sure who replaces him.

DB- Lost all 4 starters from last year, all 4 have been in NFL camps. We do bring back Jamison Whiting who started as a true freshman and was honestly our best DB against you guys in 2013 when we beat you, and Ray Buchanan Jr who played quite a bit last year as well. As mentioned we do have some transfers who I suspect we will see.

Special Team- Punter Sam Kuhter, as mentioned last year Logan Bieghler was your guy's MVP of the game, he SUCKED, Kuhter should have been the man for 2 years but wasn't for reasons I don't know. Our kicker will either be Matt Easley a senior who has been the backup for 3 years or Austin Errthum a transfer from Drake (played soccer not football) who kicked a 62 yarder in the spring game.

I really don't know how to call this game with your new coaching staff, I'll be rooting for you guys the rest of the year after this one. Finally don't call this our game that we want the most to win or our most hated opponent that would be NDSU and it isn't even close.

UNI is well coached and wants to win this game more so than any game all year..they hate ISU and Farely hates ISU. UNI has always had smaller D line but they are strong and always quicker and it's always given our much bigger Oline fits at times. THe goal is to wear them down. This UNI team will be slightly better on offense I prob not as good on Defense especially the back 4. We should always beat UNI but the Top FCS teams are actually well coached good football teams.. It's different today than 30 years ago..Today UNI is an established FCS power similar to NDSU who gets a lot of former FBS transfers. I think last years UNI squad had like 4-5 starters who had been at previous P5 teams. It's kinda like basketball..We should beat UNI each time but that doesn't mean they don't have a good team and would give a lot of teams fits. UNI few years ago nearly won @ Wisconsin.

If this was the joke you are making, I apologize ahead of time, but you sound jus like the deuchey Iowa fans that said this exact thing about our game in years past. UNI players and fans would take a national championship and playoff wins (and recently probably NDSU also) over a win vs us any week. Don't stoop to that level.

Damn man, as if I wasn't feeling bad enough about losing Jake, now you post this. I hope with three weeks of preparation working to find other people to plug the hole, the O-line will be servicable. Jake is a big loss, but like others have said, you have to be ready to step up and fill the guy's spot in front of you at any given moment. I still think we win by double-digits.

We should have ended up with a better record than we did last year though. We should have beaten Toledo and K-State IMHO. That sets us up just outside of bowl eligibility.

Unfortunately "should have beaten" and Winning are two different things......HellsBells boys McCarney led the fighting Snyders by either 21 or 28 at halftime and Still LOST...........Snyder has had our number since 1990... the Toledo game was there for the taking but as usual we cant seem to kick a winning field goal....which started with Tom Gedgen sic and the Nebraska extra point

Going back to last year's game, I don't think there's a lot for fans to be worried about.
As a visiting Panther fan, I think it's great if both teams come in remembering last year's game.

As far as the teams, both have a lot of new players. Sounds like ISU has a good new QB.

Once again, this game will ultimately be decided by Iowa states ability to move the ball and score points. Both defenses will play well.

I forsee us struggling early but making some halftime adjustments. Any win will be a good win.

Well, since some have thrown cold water on my theory, and not entirely unfairly, let me add data of interest. Sorry it's hard to read. I include UNI and NDSt here since both are excellent FCS programs.

2014 -20 2 10
2007 -11 3 9
2013 -8 3 9

2015 24 3 9
2010 27 5 7
2012 34 6 7
2001 45 7 5

When they have lost or won by a score or less (6 times, ugh), they have averaged 3.7 wins. I would say that means they are not good those years.

When they have won by 20+, they have averaged 5.6 wins. And that includes only 3 wins last year; if Toledo and KSt happen the average goes up to 6. So that means bowling or close to it. A good team.

Rather than list specific point differentials in my earlier post, implying a level of precision that isn't real, I should have said "win big", "win comfortable", and "win close or lose". Point differentials have randomness in them, so do the wins and losses when it's all said and done.

So it's a measuring stick, not a laser rangefinder. But I have found it usually is a very good predictor about what kind of team we will have.

I understand your fandom, but come on. You're talking about a current UNI player being bigger/faster/stronger than a guy who is a top running back in the NFL.

Agreed. Tyvis is bigger, but not anywhere near as fast as DJ is and calling him as strong is laughable, DJ holds nearly every UNI strength and conditioning record.

So, in summary, while very good Tyvis Smith is not as good as a current Top 5 NFL Running Back.

In my response to your original post I did not take exception to your predictions based upon historical statistics. I disagree only with your suggestion that if we manage to win only by <10 or lose, that we will suck, presumably for the season. I believe this team, coached by this staff, will improve, win or at least be competitive in it's remaining games.

The last three new head coaches we have had were facing their first ever game as head coach. Thankfully, we go into this season with a new head coach who knows how to be a head coach before the game starts. I am quite sure our coaches will do everything possible to have the OL and the whole team ready for the game. They will see new things that they did not scout from last years film and have to make adjustments. I foresee adjustments being made during the first half and not having to wait till half-time as this staff for the most part has been together and knows how to get things done. I suspect a good game, but a win should happen. I would also be willing to bet that our OL coach is well aware of what UNI has for DL and LB's and has a plan in mind already and is putting in things that should work with our OL. I really like having the OL coach be the OC.

I've already stated it, but last year's game has more significance simply because there are a lot of players that played last year who will be playing again this year.

Look, you're free to be worried about the opener all you want. I am not, mostly due to what our returning starters were able to do last year, UNI losing more player-wise than we did, overall more talent on our roster than theirs, and my confidence in the new coaching staff.

If the final score ends up within a TD I'll quote my own post to eat crow.

Welllllllll ****, but I'm a man of my word.
