Home Security Systems

Simplisafe is adversting that their Home Defense package which includes three entry sensors and one motion sensor for $199 is their best deal ever. Can anyone on here say that this is the best deal you can get for one of their packages?

Was considering for our Iowa house since we're gone 6 months.

Does anyone know if you can subscribe month to month? I don't see the value in having it activated while we're here in the summer. Not saying there isn't value, just I want the peace of mind while we're away.
I think you can get simplisafe month to month. You don't have to subscribe to active monitoring at all, actually. I'd get one of their loud-***** outdoor sirens and put it in your garage if you don't want to pay for monitoring.

I got a system for less than that but it was refurbished. Haven't had any issues with it.

I bought the starter package and gradually added to it over time. I now have five motion sensors throughout the house and entry sensors on every door and window.

Have a couple strategically placed panic buttons as well, which immediately alerts authorities.

We just bought a little camera (like $50) for our nursery that alerts our phone if there is movement or sound. It can also sound an alarm at the camera if motion/sound is detected. I'd imagine something as simple as a couple of those would work for your situation.

Holy crap, you either live in a rough part of town or are just super protective. Not saying there's anything wrong with that, but it definitely sounds like you're prepared.

I am the security system.

Another thing to consider would be to just purchase home automation sensors (z-wave/zigbee/etc) and set them up yourself: based on the previous comments it sounds like it'll run about the same cost-wise, you wouldn't have a monthly fee, and you'll have more flexibility on what you can do.

for example: I have a VeraPlus hub that is able to pair with most sensors, as well as a few cheap IP cameras that are hooked up to a computer I have at home that's running a program called Blue Iris.

With those I could setup alerts to my phone anytime the cameras detect motion or if the door/window sensors are tripped, as well as view the cameras/check the status of everything from my phone.

I'm guessing some of those security systems do this, but past the security standpoint you can also setup 'scenes' or other things to happen at certain times. In my case I have it setup that at night it'll close any open garage doors and turn off the exterior lights if they're on. I also have the outside camera setup so that if it does detect motion (and it's dark out), it'll turn on the deck lights for a period of time.

Bump.

Was reading thru this and seeing if there are more opinions.
I was looking at an Arlo type system but the wireless cameras have love it or hate it reviews.

I bought a Canary a few months ago and have been pretty happy with it.

#1 There is no monthly charge unless you want to keep all recordings for a longer period. If you find a recording that you want to keep you can just tag it.

#2 It can detect if your home by your smartphones

#3 If no one is home and it detects movement it will send an alert to your phone. You can then watch live, call the cops, trigger a built in alarm, etc.

It's not perfect but it's easy to set up and cheap.
