Home Meal Delivery Services

There are meal plans now that are pre-cooked. Just heat and serve.
That sounds awful, like buying frozen crap at the store and heating it. Most of those premade, frozen meals are just garbage. I'd rather make something myself. The problem is I like to cook, but hate the cleanup afterwards, so I just usually go out to eat unless I get a wild hair and decide to cook something myself, which is rare.

So you believe Hello Fresh buys all of their meat and produce in a fresh state?
It's a free market, but what you're paying for is portion control package food sold as fresh, with a fancy enclosed recipe. Like Schwan's, their selling convenience, but with a steeper up charge.

Well no, but everything other than the meat is.. (fruits/vegetables). And beyond that, frozen UNCOOKED meat is still a lot fresher/different than pre-made/pre-cooked/re-frozen patties/nuggets/whatever.

How much would it cost to get 12 different meals from Schwanns? I've never used them, but a quick glance at their website makes me think they're not as much cheaper as you think.

Are you guys all elderly or confined? Not trying to troll or anything. Serious question. What is the lure of meal delivery, rather than going out to eat, or going to the grocery store yourself. Just curious.

We do Home Chef and there are a few reasons we like it
- Minimal food waste when finished cooking, don't have to worry about extra ingredients spoiling.
- Helps me learn new cooking techniques and foods to cook with. There are definitely some recipes we have tried that I wouldn't have thought of on my own.
- quality of the meat is actually pretty solid
- Takes some extra thinking away at the end of a stressful day of work, everything is ready to go for me to cook, with detailed instructions.

I've never done a home meal delivery service because I enjoy cooking and I'm pretty type A about meal planning (we have three weeks planned out at all times). But this thread has shown me how many options there are. No shame to those who utilize the services. They're obviously helpful to a lot of people.

If I worked a standard 40 hour/week salary job I would cook 3x as much as I do working 60 hours a week in a commissioned role.

Bumping this. Any updates on favorite meal delivery services? We PREFER to eat at home but we're terrible about stocking up on groceries. Thinking about trying meal delivery just a couple days a week. Also might sign my kids up, who room together at college and maybe a couple meals a week they actually won't waste their money on Door Dash.

Just tossing out an idea totally different than meal delivery services.

Have you considered buying a Food Saver?

Even though it's just my husband & I at home, I still cook like we have two growing teenage boys in the house. We're not huge on eating leftovers for multiple days, so I use the Food Saver a lot.

I also use it to make meals for my parents and aunt and give them as Christmas presents. I'll spend a few days making various meals, portion them into 1 or 2 person servings, vacuum seal them with the Food Saver and put them in the freezer.

We also do this with brisket and pulled pork (make sure you also include a decent amount of juice & warm it up slow & low). We can do smaller 1-2 person portions or make a big "party in a bag" portion. It's great for when we want to have a group over but don't want to spend the day tied to the smoker.

There are also recipes where you can put the ingredients together, vacuum seal them and later get them out to cook.

When using these meal services what is the average cost per meal?
I would guess more than if you are just going to the store but less if you are going to a restaurant each night.

we get hello fresh... 3 meals for 2 people.... $65 around. so $10 per meal per person... not bad.. saves me time going to the grocery

I did a 3 month trial of Hello Fresh just because we were stuck in a rut dinner-wise, eating the same things over and over. I suck as a cook and my wife is more a baker than chef, so it seemed worthy of trying. I actually enjoyed cooking the meals, with no worry that I was getting the portions wrong and even my 19 & 15 yo sons helped me on occasion, resulting in some enjoyable family time.
