Hilton Coliseum Renovation

Glad the steps are finally being addressed. They have been an eyesore for many years. I wonder what the new entrance will look like. The ticket office used to be under the steps a long time ago before they moved it to where it is now.

We camped under the south steps in 1980 to buy Who tickets. To keep warm we invented mega juice. Mad Dog 20 20, 7 up and everclear. It tasted like crap. For a few years after we had mega juice parties on our dorm floor. We would start around 9:00 and were usually over by midnight. It looked like Jonestown from the passed out bodies.

“Tasted like crap” might be generous lol lol but to each their own. We did some vodka pong to get the job done.

Good times!

If it is similar to the north it could open up some additional options for parking.
Or some kind of concourse too. I'd have to dig through some archives but I swear there was a proposal sometime after 2010 before the last round of renovation talks happened where they were removing that walkway and putting in some kind of outdoor concourse at that entrance.

I still hope we can get the Hilton renovations funded in the near future with the money we have invested in TJ and the program in general. We've put off renovations to Hilton for far too long. Pollard has even said it himself before that Men's Basketball is our crown jewel for sports. The new scoreboard, ribbon boards and sound systems are nice but our concessions and concourse areas are in dire need of improvements. We've transformed Jack Trice and the surrounding area into one of the nicer football facilities in the Big 12 IMO. Phog Allen Fieldhouse got some renovations in recent years and that is the only other place in the conference and maybe a handful of other places in the country that are tougher to play at than Hilton.

The NIL era has really put a hurt on renovation projects and it sucks that we have to spend millions on players we hope stay around while we put off much needed facilities projects. We already had to kill the plans for the wrestling facility too.

Would love to walk to the center of that court, murder a few dudes and then scream “Are you not entertained?!?!?!?”

edit: @Kettes I'm just saying it looks a lot like the provincial arena in the movie Gladiator. I don't actually want to murder people :D
Your burn book is intense

Just about every floor had its own unique flavor of mad dog during that time. Also I think the Who was at the UNI dome that year( or could be the stones) thing I remember most was they had 20,000 at the UNI dome and it got so hot and humid that it actually rained inside the dome.

I know the ped walkways are in really bad shape and are sort of not necessary but I hope they keep them. I like them.

The Stones played the Uni Dome in 1980. The Who was there in 1982. I worked there at the time and saw both shows.

Covid year (revenue hit) + NIL era (new expenses) + Big 12 expansion (revenue hit) all in a span of 5 years.

There were a couple different expansion/renovation proposals.

First was mid 2000s to build a practice facility connected to Hilton on the south side and an expansion of the south concourse to make it larger. I think that expansion was going to drop from the roof straight down and create a flat southern face.

The second was late 2010s and would have expanded the whole concourse on all sides. This is the one that was cancelled last year.

There used to be concept images of the mid 2000s online, but I can't find them now. This is the late 2010's concept images.
