High School State Tournaments

Just looked at brackets; how was it determined who received a first round bye?

Instead of byes they should’ve had round one losers wrestle again in later that round. Winners wrestle once that round and the wrestlers that loose two matches are eliminated.

(I may not be explaining this very clearly…)

At the completion of round one then the net result of the number of wrestlers would be the same, I think.
If a wrestler “wins” a bye match, is their team awarded any advancement points?

Double digit seeds to make it into the semis:

1A:
106 - #10 Lucas Oldenkamp (Lake Mills)
145 - #13 Karter Decker (MFL MarMac)
182 - #15 Caden Ballou (Midland)

2A:
106 - #12 Jayson Stevens (Hampton-Dumont-CAL)
152 - #14 Lucas Kral (Garner-Hayfield/Ventura)
170 - #14 Hesston Johnson (Roland-Story)
285 - #14 Wil Textor (Dike-New Hartford)
285 - #18 Russel Coil (Columbus/WMU)
Textor from DNH (2A 285) upset the 3 seed yesterday in OT and then wins by getting illegally slammed in OT today. Was watching on Flo and it very much picked up the Grinnell kid not wanting to shake his hand and calling him a b*tch as he lay motion-less on the mat. Regardless, Textor weighs just a shade over 200...has to eat and drink in order to even make weight on the bottom side of Hvy Wt...kid is fun to watch!

An observation on how brackets played out under the new qualifications. Correct me if I am wong

Prior to this year 16 wrestlers qualified at each weight class in each division (672 total wrestlers - 16x14x3). After day one, 12 wrestlers were still alive for day two (504 total wrestlers - 12x14x3).

This year, 24 qualified in each class (1008 total wrestlers) and all wrestled on day two as well. So, through two days there have been 2,016 wrestlers whereas it was 1,176 in prior years.

Then, prior years wrapped up on day three with 8 wrestlers per class (336 total). Day three this year has 12 per class (504 total) and then day four with the 336.

in all, 1,512 total daily wrestlers previously to now 2,856. So, just short of double the number of close family member tickets sold.

#15 seed Ballou had a season record of 44-3. I see someone posted the seeding calculus, but someone would think a 44-3 kid should be seeded higher. How did he get missed?

18 seed at hvy weight in 2A is something like 43-7 and is in the semis. Strange to miss kids that have that kind of win %

The parents aren’t where you pull the money though. I know several extended family members that felt they could come Thursday and still see them. Also, classmates, then general overall observers. I’m here now and I can tell you that 40 minutes before the start, you pretty much can sit where you want and that includes extra space marked off for wrestlers who are done since there are 3x the wrestlers done right now that there normally would be. I used to come down here and by 30 minutes before the start you were stuck in the middle of the top level.

This is dead compared to past years.

Yeah the Textor kid is quite a story. Wonder if he is good to go today? Gonnna be tough for him as the competition gets better, but tough kid!

If his seven losses were to people who also made state in his class and weight, those wrestlers got an extra point for that.
Had to take a look. He only had 5 losses. 19th seeded kid was 18-25 so it is kinda odd. Might have had bad districts?

Someone said they seeded the top 8 and then went to a random draw seeding for 9-24. Not sure if that is true or not, I just heard that floated. I’m not as deeply tied into the the things that I used to be, so I’m spitballing like others.

It isn't. All 24 are seeded.

"...the individual state tournament, using the TrackWrestling system, will be seeded for wrestlers #1-24, using criteria to include head-to-head competition, common opponents, state place winner, and state qualifier."
