Kind of crazy the Naaktgeboren brothers are a year a part and 44 pound weight difference

The participation rate has been declining the last several years if not more. They added weights and now many duals are forfeit parades. We are near the point where just going out puts you at state.

Right now there are too many teams with 2-6 wrestlers. Practice partners become a problem. Then since numbers are light the teams will close and not function
i agree that’s a problem, but don’t see how eliminating weight classes, or letting less people make it to state fixed our participation issues?

We just increased the amount of people who make state by 50%. Should we just say the heck with it and make it another day or two and let everyone in?

There are better things you can do than just add weights. I know a few schools that have cut agreements because the numbers were lower and the sharing caused them to go to 2a. They split and went 1A and after 2-3 years, they were right back at the same numbers. The first HS I went to didn't have wrestling, then we shared and 1-2 kids is all that ever went to wrestle. Sharing and bumping a school up a class will not help. Adding weights did not help, all it did was water down the competition. Ever notice that the time that Iowa started slipping in wrestling talent seemed to coincide with adding weights? Top talent was now thinner at each weight and they didn't push each other. Extra weights also meant a lot less JV wrestling so a JV wrestler who should not be V wrestling would wander out and get 16-1 tech falled a few times and say F it, I'm done getting embarrassed and would be in the stands watching the next year.

What about the teams that have 40+ members. Punish them and lower their numbers because some school don’t support their wrestling program. It isn’t easy but get a coach that cares goes a long way. I totally agree with Crablegs that we need to be created in getting more kids out not less.

How many 1As have 40+ kids out? Heck, how many 2As have that many out? I know some 3As that don’t have that many. The local school has HUGE support through out it and they typically range 15-19 kids out for wrestling.

The guys in Boone need to understand that every time they mess with this, they make it worse. IMO, it would be best to shave a weight or two or go to 2 classes instead of adding 50% more wrestlers to state. They watered it down for what?, I know the answer, more funds.
It is rare the boys in Boone make decisions that make sense. I think this one was to address how they assign district sites back in November with no regard to ranked wrestlers and occasionally a highly ranked kid would get third at the qualifier and miss state.
Another reason may be that because they finally moved state duals back to its own weekend, they had extra space in the schedule. Classes each now have a single session each day which is better on the athletes bodies. Going three deep at districts also aligns with what the girls union did.

They don’t go three deep at districts. They went to 12 districts instead of 8. The last couple years, they didn’t announce who was at what district until deeper into the wrestling season. The one at Ogden had over half the schools with over 90 minute drives to get there, so they didn’t shorten it with more districts also.

Yeah good ol West Hancock had a nice little 1:45 drive

Emmetsburg, ackley, north tama were other schools that had some nasty drives to that district when you consider 10am starts instead of the old noon starts for districts.
Yeah you made me go back and look at the list of schools there. Man that was a great placement.

Schools that did just fine on their own not terribly long ago are now co-oping and still not fielding full lineups. That's not a result of the number of weight classes.

There were 13 weights in 1980. The 14th was added in 2001. There are still 14.

Haven't read the rest of the post but had to stop here. Most of the coaches care. It comes down to resources. To even think this is ******.

I don't really follow wrestling but my great nephew is headed to state in the 126 pound weight class for the second time. He is a junior this year and I think his record is something like 101-2.

Pretty cool to see him work so hard and make it this far.
