High School Sports Thread

It seems like the last 10 years central Iowa schools have been destroying eastern Iowa schools in all sports at the state championship level. Anyone here have theories why?
They have easier access to year round private coaching. There are a couple places for it with baseball around CR/IC and iFly for swim kids in IC but outside of that if a kid is good you're going to be spending a whole mess of time on the road to and from the metro. There's a few other factors as well but that's really what separates central Iowa from the rest of the state from what I've seen.

I will say that at least for the boys, swimming is still pretty competitive statewide. There are really good coaches and club teams in most of the bigger population centers.

The lengths some parents/families will go to for high level coaching etc. will astound a lot of people.

On the last ISU wrestling meet the pxp guy told the story of one of the Missouri wrestlers who spent most of his youth in Louisiana but wanted better high level coaching so their family and a couple of others started driving a couple of times a month to Pennsylvania on the weekends.

The difference in the number and extent of these types of club programs in Central Iowa vs. even CR/IC and Eastern Iowa is pretty significant.

While the IC area has a lot of population and economic growth, the CR/IC corridor is still quite a bit smaller than the Des Moines metro. Plus the proximity of the schools and ease in OE in central Iowa makes it pretty easy for kids to align to the school of their choice.

Do that many more girls play during a volleyball match? Are girls leaving volleyball bc of it? It's killing basketball at the small schools, I don't pay as much attention to the big schools but teach/coach at a 1a school and VB is destroying basketball at our level. The common narrative seems to be that club VB is killing most other girls sports, I've never heard it blamed on bball. VB is pay to play, you don't have to compete or really even be that good and you can always find a spot, if you are willing to pay.
I'd say a rotation of 10-11 is pretty common in VB, while girls HS bball might be typically 8. But both can vary a bit.

The running and physicality of bball is not for everyone. I think that can be a factor in addition to more kids getting playing time in the shift to VB.

You’ll see some places where there are concentrations of wealth (PV) start to catch up.

But I mean it when I say I grew up in Boone and the competitive level in the Metro is absolutely nuts.

I had a friend back home ask me what club basketball was like, I said basically there are 500 6th graders better than anybody in our town growing up.

I almost have to stop paying attention to state basketball....I just get pissed at the amount of private schools in the tournament and how well they do with every advantage possible. Especially in the lower levels.
Sure.

Are we recruiting her? She is in the gym all the time shooting by herself.
She is just a sophomore I believe but she is GOOD! I watched her completely dominate DCG the first time they played this year. DCG had no answer for her, she just scored at will on them. The 2nd time they played later in the season apparently DCG just swarmed her with 2 or 3 defenders non-stop and shut her down. The 3rd matchup is going to be interesting. I would guess she would get some D1 recruiting attention.

ive been watching the action yesterday and today. those mt pleasant girls are studs

It’s no different than what it was 20 years ago.
