High School Sports Thread

Question: back in the day we used to cancel school when we went to state n basketball and wrestling. Did we have to make that up or did that count towards an attendance day? Or did the state look the other way?

Storm lake coach screwed up. Had a time out and then didn’t take it as his team had two bad offensive possessions back to back.

Yes, brother. He is going to Texas A&M to play football.
Agree with you on the Newell Fonda thing their long run is more than a group that came through and then went back to average. I assume there is some really good support at the lower grade levels for their sports.
As a former player, coach and administrator at a highly successful Iowa high school, my two cents is that the high school coaching ranks today are no longer made up of educators and men like Ed Thomas of A-P, who knew how to lead young men (and women) and were in it for the right reasons. He is just one example of the many educators from the Boomer generation that no longer fill those roles (for many reasons).

And Pekin is on a gravel road.
No it's on a paved road, but you have to take gravel roads to reach the school from the south. Go up to the old Pioneer setup and head east and you can come in from the North, which is pavement the entire way, buts its out of your way. If you go North at the Eldon Y, you have to take some gravel or coming from Fairfield you have some gravel. But the highway in front of the school is paved from the RR tracks to the south all the way north to the Brighten highway. Coming down from SK it would be pavement the entire way.

Who the hell thought it was a good idea to start naming these dumbass iowa schools things that don’t include a town or county? Ridgeview, North Union, Riverside, Southeast Valley, Union?
Speaking of Southeast Valley, I've always wondered where the 'Grand' in their predecessor 'Southeast Webster-Grand' came from. Only thing I've been able to find is this:

Boxholm and Pilot Mound merged to form Grand in 1958

that’s what I mean, from the south. That’s how I had to reach the football field without going through Richland.

Yep, for Van Buren parents, most took the gravel road, to avoid back tracking.

Yes, the school was called Grand of Boxholm. My team competed against them in baseball when I was in little league. I think they tore down part of the school, but the community saved and revitalized the remaining part to use as a community center.

The thing that’s stupid crazy about Iowa is, towns liked each other to join and form a school district, but hated each other not to want a building in the others town. It’s all over the state.

What the hell is “Union”?

I’ll take the alphabet soup schools or NW (insert county name) over these lame, non-descriptive names.

Union has been around for over 30 years. Sometimes referred to as LaPorte City Union, but officially I think they are just Union Community School District, in the Waterloo-CF area. We played them all the time in everything growing up in the 90s-2000s.
