What the hell is “Union”?

Who the hell thought it was a good idea to start naming these dumbass iowa schools things that don’t include a town or county? Ridgeview, North Union, Riverside, Southeast Valley, Union?

I’ll take the alphabet soup schools or NW (insert county name) over these lame, non-descriptive names.

So how do you feel about Ballard?

La Porte City, Dysart, Genesseo, Mount Auburn.

Not easy to just pick a county when the school district could easily stretch across four or more counties.

Ex: Ridge View is the combination of Galva-Holstein and Schaller-Crestland. That district covers parts of Cherokee, Buena Vista, Ida, and Sac counties.

My first teaching job was at Crestland, a lifetime ago. I was the first teacher that was shared with Schaller, a couple of years before they started sharing sports. There was 10 teams in the conference when I was there, think they make up 4 schools now.
Crestland, Schaller, Wall Lake, Lake View-Alburn, Fonda, Lytton, Newell-Providence, Battle Creek, Pomeroy and Lohville.

They had an uptick then. Girl who graduated from there a few years ago said she had a class of 12. Said that area was common. So maybe they grew a bit.

This times 1000. Them losing with Omaha was coaching malpractice. We played them the yesr before to go to state and beat them, but they were good. All juniors. Add Omaha and it should have been a slam dunk. Old Drake coach Kanaskie’s son I believe.

Cardinal's official name is Cardinal of Eldon, just like Pekin is Pekin of Packwood. People tend to shorten both of them up and just call them Cardinal and Pekin. Rumor was that during the 60s, Pekin wanted to merge with Cardinal, they only wanted to have the high school north of highway 34, Cardinal refused.
Both have high schools out the middle of no where, Pekins is actually built on the runway of a WW2 airbase. Harmony HS was the same way, built on a corn field with nothing around it.
