Head Hunter details for Matt Campbell

Recruiters can do things that the University cannot do for themselves. For example: A lot of coaches contracts state they cannot have communication with another school without notifying the AD. A recruiter can have conversation with both sides to see if there is mutual interest before either side making anything public.

Also, a good recruiter knows who the hot candidates are in their space and knows what it will take to get them interested in a new position. They can save an AD a lot of time by not chasing candidates that are unobtainable for that school.

In the hunt for Campbell, Iowa State entered into a contract that paid Parker a flat fee of $90,000 plus $7,553 in additional expenses.

Any insight regarding what the additional expenses are for? It seems inconsistent that there was a flat-fee price plus additional expenses.

And I agree, money well spent. It would not have been hard for the AD to burn through $100k if they had to do the legwork themselves rather than out-source it. Even if doing everything in-house would have been cheaper, the cost difference would likely have been small.

Pollard said Parker created a strategy that worked perfectly. Pollard camped out two blocks from Campbell's house. Once Toledo lost a game that sealed no MAC Championship Game bid, Iowa State was the first to speak with Campbell.

No, nothing weird about this process at all.

My guess would be airfare, hotels, etc. But hard to know what is and isn't included in these numbers.

I would assume some would be travel expenses: hotels, rental cars, meals, etc.

Flat fee was $90,000.

Then, upon meeting with everyone in Detroit at 5 star restaurant La Porteray Mula, Jamie Pollard wanted to impress Matt Campbell and asked for "the most expensive bottle of wine."

Hence the $7,553.

As stated I am sure it is travel expense. Plus I bet they coordinate meeting rooms and dinners and all that stuff, and then the AD just reimburses them for it. I used to think it was stupid for AD's to outsource this, but the bigger the $ the more I understand, plus all the people in the AD have so many jobs to do. To really do the research would probably end up costing the AD more than hiring it done by people that know what they are doing.

The sentence sounds weird but I think the strategy made sense. Campbell wouldn't talk to anybody until after the end of the regular season/MACCG. We knew there would be or could be multiple suitors for CMC. So Pollard went to town and was ready to talk to him ASAP after Toledo lost to WMU and missed the MACCG, we were in position to move first. Smart and good preparation. Pollard isn't putting up a tent in suburban Toledo.

Plus the less people in the AD that know the less likely premature leaks will get out and hurt the process.

Oh, I agree completely that it was most likely necessary to get "first dibs." It's just kind of sad and odd that this is what a search to fill a vacancy has come to.

Likely Hookers & Blow! It takes "talent" to attract talent - just ask Louisville!

Why is it sad and odd? JP had a guy he wanted and he wasn't going to eff around and let Mizzou or any other P5 team get to him first. That's smart.

That seems like not very much compared to how much it costs to hire an $80,000 employee. The thing they can do is stay under the radar and not attach a school to a coach.

I picture some people on CF using this tactic to meet girls

Per diem for travel. that's likely a couple of flights and hotels, plus meals and daily expenses. These are not unusual. Everyone here just needs to get a big boy job so you can see this stuff in action.
