On the reverse side, offensive turnovers per game:
2017: 0.1 fumbles, 0.7 interceptions
2018: 0.8 fumbles, 0.7 interceptions
2019: 0.5 fumbles, 0.7 interceptions
2020: 0.4 fumbles, 0.8 interceptions
2021: 0.4 fumbles, 0.7 interceptions
2022: 0.6 fumbles, 1.3 interceptions
2023: 0 fumbles, 0.5 interceptions

Another stat I noticed, addressing the failure to "win in the margins":
From 2017-2021, every year except 2020 averaged fewer than 5 penalties and 40 penalty yards per game (2020 was 5.1 penalties and 42.6 penalty yards per game). In 2022, those numbers were up to 5.6 penalties and 46.1 penalty yards per game.

I know everyone wants to take away the red flags from the Iowa game. But to me, thus far Becht has shown that he's a generally good decision-maker who is likely to keep turnovers significantly lower than last season. And while penalties were high in the UNI game (some weird calls, though), Iowa State only had 2 penalties for 24 yards against Iowa.
Becht has a lower ceiling and higher floor than Dekkers from a raw talent perspective but is much smarter and reads the defense much better.

Jeff Woody had some great comments. Relax. Chill. Let the team and coaches work things out and see what happens. Reality. We have made a heavy investment in Matt Campbell. Second highest number of season tickets ever. We are investing in CyTown. Recruiting going well. Campbell is our Coach. It is called economic and football reality. Cost to terminate and cost to hire new. Plus the reality that Campbell has taken a coaches graveyard school to a NY6 Bowl and actually won. Plus coached the school to the Conference Championship Game for the first time ever. Matt is a Conference Coach of the Year. Better chance with him versus anyone else. Wonder what kind of coaches we would attract to our situation. Firing a head coach in a knee jerk reaction 6 months after replacing his OC and OL Coaches. Saban and Kirby will be fighting to be the first to apply. LOL

If I go out and get a DUI tomorrow I’m in real jeopardy of losing my job (we drive periodically for projects and have to be insurable). Should my manager be fired as well?

Did your manager specify that it's forbidden for your job? Do you drive as part of your job requirements?

Apples to oranges unless you drive for your job, and your manager hires several people who get DUIs.

It's tough to enjoy college ball when your team is losing *and* playing borderline unwatchable style while doing it

My comment was more of a general comment, but I get it. Ultimately the NFL guys are pros so naturally they are going to provide more appealing play.

My biggest thing is length of games. College has really let game times and ad time get away from them. You know a typical NFL game is going to be done in 3 hours and change barring OT or something weird

Do you read posts before responding?

Why is this compared to college games? I thought they adopted most NFL timing rules this season.

Hopefully it does make a difference this year. Leading up to this year it seemed like 3.5-4 hour games were becoming more common in college

Really not sure if his input is taken as gospel but there's a CW-cast with Sage this week and he was saying it's possibly an upgrade.

Was listening to the CW and Blum pod today and they were getting questions from twitter I assume, in one question I heard the dreaded, “we have a lot of talent coming in” line.

You could say the same thing about TJ's program right now.

I don't think you'd argue there's much "rot" in there at the moment.

TJ has a top 10 recruiting class coming in. Not top 10 in the conference, top 10 in the country.

And TJ is coming off two straight tournament appearances with a Sweet 16 thrown in there. No covid year asterisk.

All true. Just sayin' -- that "dreaded" quote needs some context.

The ceiling for Iowa State basketball is likely much higher than for football, too.

I swear commercial breaks are different between college and pro but everything I find says the same thing. There are 8 commercial breaks per half in both. I can't find anything definitive about length of break. Everyone negotiating their own media rights deals certainly makes that all the more difficult to understand.

I will probably have "reviews should be limited to 120 seconds" on my tombstone given the likelihood of that ever getting fixed.

The reason I dread that quote is because of how many times we heard that line during the Rhoads era.

Rhoads peak seasons are worse than Campbell’s lesser seasons. Rhoads would have been elated with a Cheezit Bowl loss and a winning season.

What TJ is doing is amazing, but it’s still way easier to change a basketball program than a football program.

Using purely analytics (and the 247 rankings), Rhoads' average recruiting class was #63 in the country, Campbell's is 54. So yes, it has improved. But at 54, particularly when several of the top-rated recruits are guys that didn't do anything at Iowa State, you need to be solid to great at the other aspects. Development, in-game coaching, special teams, discipline, etc. I think there's some evidence and maybe growing, that CMC can develop players. But the play calling, in game coaching, special teams, etc. have been far below average. And despite losing 9 of our last 10 P5 games (and 15 of our last 19), he doesn't seem to want to change anything.

I'm sort of a junkie of sports radio and podcasts. I recently heard an interview with Marcus Freeman, Notre Dame's coach. He was reflecting on changes he had to make to his game plans following an 0-2 start last year. He said that all coaches like to use the phrase "trust the process" and that it works for new coaches as it allows for perspective and giving new coaches some leash. But he added that he believes that there comes a point when that no longer works and it's time to "fix the process". They're 12-2 since.
