Poster is ranked #1 in D-II. It isn't a great loss, but it isn't a horrible loss. I wonder if Tanner is having issues from the weight cut.

That true freshman from Grand View is Josh Wenger from Cedar Rapids Prairie High School. State champ last year at 138 lbs with a finals win over Daniel Kelly, now a freshman at ISU.
I'm not saying Rodriguez shouldn't have beaten him, but maybe ISU should have recruited Wenger. He's really good.
Ok, Porter may be better than I realized and I am not in Ames so didn't see the match in person. I was hoping Tanner would solidify himself as a serious AA candidate. Judging from early results I would say this isn't looking likely. If he is having a tough time with the weight cut I guess I can understand that, but they have known him and Weatherspoon were going down at the conclusion of last year. I would have hoped he would be better prepared for the cut by now. Evidently not.
I'm just guessing about the weight. He could be dinged up, he could be burnt out, he could just not have his head on straight at this point in the season. Hopefully he gets healed up or figures it out though because we need points from him in March.

I would speculate he is having issues with the cut. He looked big for a 65 lber today. He was dominate in his early matches but I didn't stay for the finals match
I was right there watching the match and didn't come away all that concerned. Tanner looked a little gassed in the 3rd but fought hard and wrestled well for the most part. My dad and I both came away very impressed with Poster. Guy is a machine.

I wasn't saying that you weren't correct necessarily, just that Wenger might just be really good.
Obviously the ISU wrestler (Dante) shouldn't lose to a freshman from Grand View, but just maybe Wenger is a lot better than everyone thinks too?
Some thoughts:
125: Kyle Larson's best win was over D-II #7 ranked Connor Bolling. That was also his only loss (He lost to Bolling in the quarterfinals and then beat him in the 3rd place match)
133: Godwin Cutler, the guy he beat in the finals, was a Pennsylvania State champ, he wrestled (poorly) for Pitt as a true freshman, transferred to Grand Canyon last season and then to Grand View this season. Hopefully Hall opens up a bit more going forward, he's had multiple matches this year that were way tighter than they needed to be
141: Best win for both Dante and Meeks was over Jake Keothe of UNI, he was a 4x Iowa placewinner, 3x finalist, and 1 time champ. But Meeks beat him worse last season so I would have liked to see him do better than that. Dante's worst loss was to Wegner of Grandview (who, to be honest, has also knocked off some Iowa guys this year, either all the D-1 schools in the state missed on him or he was only able to be eligible in NAIA) and Meeks worst loss was also to Keothe, who he split with. No shame in losing to Andrew Long in the semis. I don't think they separated themselves much on Sunday.
149: Moreno was out so an incomplete on this.
157: Breitenbach's worst loss was probably going down 9-5 to Castillo, who he'd beaten on Thursday. His other loss was to D-II #2 ranked (@165) Gabe Fogerty. His best win was probably over Grant Henderson of Grand View, who is ranked #3 at 149 in NAIA. Rodriguez Spencer's only loss was to #8 ranked Cody Pack of SDSU and he picked up a win over Castillo and a win over Henderson. Like at 141, I don't think either guy separated themselves much. But Spencer gained a bit of an edge.
165: Weatherman didn't really have any great opponents until the finals, but he dominated them like he should. His loss in the finals was to the #1 ranked guy in D-II at 157 so it is tough to gauge much from that.
174: This was one of the weaker brackets in the tournament so tough to read much into it. No losses but no "good" wins.
184: Pestano's only loss was to unranked in D-II Zach Stodden of Nebraska Kearney and his best win was over Minnesota backup Dalton Lunde. Nothing special but he looked like he belonged on a D-I mat. I was really worried after VT that he was gonna get rolled this year until Downey is eligible.
197: No Harringotn so incomplete. Downey wrestled up a weight and defaulted out after losing in OT to Hanson of Grandview. In the finals Hanson took #15 Rotert of SDSU to OT, so I wouldn't consider that a bad loss while wrestling up a weight and having been focused on Freestyle training.
HWT: Actually a pretty good meet from Smith. He was up 11-7 over the #1 ranked guy in D-II before he got caught and pinned. Obviously a win would have been much better but I think Smith is going to be pretty solid for us this season. Not AA level, but I think he's going to be a qualifier.

A pretty disappointing day. Definetly expected us to have more than 2 champs.
Weatherman's loss to Poster is not a bad one. I've watched him beat lots of DI guys at our tournament the last couple years. Last year he whooped Missouri's starting 157 lber, who was ranked like 12th.

Iowa got a good one in Kemerer. He rolled thru what was easily the toughest bracket of the day, 149.
He was injured at the freestyle tournament in NYC and tried to give it a go. Sounds like he is going to Vegas for the CK (must be able to wrestle unattached). I am holding any judgement until at least then.
