Found out my dad wants a new pistol for Christmas. I want to buy one for him, but I don't have my permit or whatever. question, how long does it take after filling out the paperwork to receive your permit to buy? I wonder if I can get it before Christmas or if I need to find something else to get him.

He has his permit btw.

I don't think you need a CWP to buy a hand gun for your dad. You would just purchase it, not be allowed to carry it, and have it cased/unloaded in transport, just like a shotgun or rifle.

Might just want to call the gun shop you are buying from and ask them about the laws of it.

Edit: I am wrong, after some research you do need a permit to purchase a handgun. My bad.

I have had a concealed permit for years so I am not up to date on this topic, but I beleive you will require a permit to purchase and there is a waiting period.

You can get a permit to buy from your local cop shop. For the conceal and carry it takes about a week to process the paper work at the police station and then they will print you a card there.

I believe you need to have a permit to buy a hand gun. You will need to take the class and then paper work. You won't have time. Since he has his permit, your best option would be to make up a gift certificate and tell him you will buy what he wants. That way its faster, he gets what he wants, and you don't have to go through all the paper work and time and then maybe not get it down on time. Technically, I do not think you can buy it for him, You will need to give him cash before you go in and he can give you the change.

Ok, so a week for conceal carry is a week, but the permit to buy they just hand it to you the day you go in? Is there still 7 day wait on hand guns from the store?

The class is just for conceal carry isn't it? I didn't even think you had to take a class anymore

If you have your CCP, you don't need a permit to purchase I believe. So if you're planning on getting your CCP, don't waste time and money on a permit to purchase.

You need to get a purchase permit to buy a hand gun, whether it's for you or your dad. Just go to the county courthouse. It'll cost you a small fee (seems like $25), and you get a piece of paper that you'll have to show to buy the gun.

If you are simply looking to buy a handgun, you need a "permit to acquire." You can obtain your "permit to acuire" from your county sheriffs office. I believe it costs $10 to fill out the form at your local county sheriffs office. If you are simply wanting to buy, there is no class needed to take, etc. If I remember right, when I got my permit to acquire, it took hardly any time, maybe a couple of days at the max to have it approved.

Just trying to understand some thing here, but what's the process in Iowa to buy a handgun? Everyone here is saying you need to get a permit first. Now do you get the permit, then go to a store, pick out one you want then do the background check or do you do the background check when you get the permit?

Permit to Purchase is what you need. Go to your local county sheriff's office. You fill out the application and there is a 48 hour "cooling off" period for which they will not issue you the permit. After 48 hours they will issue you the permit to purchase. It costs just a few bucks. The only hiccup would be if you're in Polk County, as they are slow as sin and backed up. Any other questions you can PM me, I've had to deal with this stuff a lot.

Yeah, county sheriff. In polk county you can even apply online, then once you're approved you go to their headquarters to show ID & pick it up. Here's what they list as requirements on their website:

Applicant Must:

  • be a citizen, a naturalized citizen or a resident alien;
  • be a resident of Polk County;
  • be twenty-one (21) years of age;
  • at the time of pickup, provide a valid driver's license or other picture ID with current address provided by the State of Iowa.

All orders require a valid email address to communicate the status of your order. You will be notified via email whether your application has been approved or denied. If approved, you will be required to come in person at Patrol Headquarters, 6023 NE 14th Street, Des Moines, Iowa and show your valid form of identification. The address on your application must match the address on your identification.

A permit to acquire weapons requires a fee of $11 and a valid driver's license or non-operator I.D. that contains your photograph and current address issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation. A permit to acquire is valid for one year from the date of issue. If the permit is denied, $5.00 will be reimbursed to the applicant. The Sheriff's Office will retain the remainder for processing and handling of the application

Also just an FYI, there's no such thing as a 'concealed carry permit' in Iowa. Since you can carry open or concealed, it is simply a 'permit to carry'. That takes a class by an authorized instructor, about $55, & around 4 weeks to receive after applying.

See my post below about the process of getting a permit. There are two different types of permits. There is a "permit to purchase" which just allows you to buy a handgun, but does not allow you to carry (holster) it loaded. Then there is a "permit to carry" which requires you to take a class (which can be done online) and allows you more freedom with your gun.

Once you get either permit then you take it to the gun shop, pick up out a handgun, hand them your permit and driver's license. They will fill out documents to register your gun in your name and you'll be leaving with the gun that day.

If you're in a major city yes. In my county it is issued that day, without even a cooling off period.

If I have a CCP, can I have a loaded un cased rifle in my truck? Just out of curiousity.....seems by the time I get out, load my gun, the critter I was about to shoot has eluded me. Im talking coyotes, not deer/pheasant etc.

Also, funny story, in High School, local gun store, buddy is like 17, go into the store, buys a handgun. Guy who owns the store puts the gun in a brown paper sack with a box of ammo and we walk out. Guy has long since died but funny to think about. this was only 12 ish years ago.
