Grade School Lunch

As a toddler parent, I feel this. I have no idea how something that's only 35 pounds can put down snacks for hours on end.
Thank god. I thought it was just my kids. 6, 4, and 1 1/2. Holy **** they can eat. I shudder to think of the grocery bill when they are teenagers

Crazy short.
Terrible food.

My son's school handles peanut allergies by sitting all the kids who bring lunch from home together. They have a lot more time to eat than kids eating school lunch.

They're also pretty good with snacks. It's supposed to be in the afternoon but if they eat late, most teachers will allow them to eat their snack in the morning.

My kids took their lunch basically for time reasons cause of the line. Making five school lunches every night was a pain. Worst was when three were in high school at the same time although they could supplement by buying stuff from a concession stand where you could buy stuff they sold at games without a big line. The good part about it though was you could get them to eat more nutritionally by sending the fruits and veggies you knew they liked.

Part of the issue could be when they eat. Wife says lunches start just before 11. So by 11:15 a few grades could be done and if they don’t get home until a little after 4 then it’s getting close to supper time for several.

Now imagine the 4/day a week kids and they have an extra 30 minutes a day of school time.

Just getting them ready for military basic training. Been 30 years for me but I still find myself eating stupid fast.

Same. My friends and family always say I eat so fast. When I am with my Marine buddies we all get done at the same time.

As far as lunch. Whomever said it's because the lunch line is correct. The kids at the front get way longer. That is why kids try and run down the hall to get at the start of the line

Maybe I'm misremembering things or out of my element here... but have grade school lunches always been so short?

For the past several years my kids have come home starving multiple times and when I asked them if they had lunch they would respond with things like, "We had a shorter lunch today because so and so wasn't ready or I tried, but ran out of time." I just chalked it up to my kids talking with friends too much and not focusing on eating.

Fast forward to today where I met my kid for lunch and JESUS. I think he had maybe 10-12 minutes tops to eat his lunch. Is this normal in the school system now? I swear when I was younger we got at least 30 minutes. There was never a rush to eat. I'm starting to realize why my kids engulf their food at home and when we go out to eat now.
When I was in school we would have lunch directly followed by recess. It was like an hour total.

I think park of the issue is you have schools that have 500 kids that they need to file through lunch everyday. Giving each class 20-30 minutes means they’re serving some kids lunch at 10:45 and some at 1:00 pm. If they expanded the each class’s time, then kids would eat earlier and later in the day.

The other question is how long is the school day. In the 80s when i was in K-12 (1989 grad) we got to school by 8am, classes start at 8:20 and done at 3:15. If schools aren't starting till 9am now in some cases I can see why lunch is shorter. We had about 45 min.

Kids school day is 8:20 to 3:15

My school started at 8:30, I got there at 8:29:50 and was done at 3:30.

I lived next to the elementary school, so I always ran home to eat.

When I was in high school I had time to drive 5 min home, eat and drive 5 min back. Probably another 5 min walking to and from car.

There was a classmate when I was 8th grade who could eat his lunch and get a BJ on 3rd floor. He got caught like the second time though.
