Good lighter refreshing summer beer?

I've always been a darker beer guy.... I like porters and stouts like Guinness for example.

But in the summer, I don't usually want a darker heavier beer and just want something lighter and more refreshing. But I don't care for the awful Miller, Budweiser, or Coors junk... I want something good without a terrible aftertaste.

And the other caveat is that I don't care for anything too hoppy, like IPA's. A little hoppy is okay, but not too much.

I do like Spotted Cow from New Glarus, but you can only get that in Wisconsin.

Any recommendations?

Exile Zoltan is my personal favorite for the summer. Session IPA, so a little hoppy but not much. Goes down easy.

Out of Wisconsin but I think was distributed in Iowa (Hy-Vee?) was Capitol Brewery Island Wheat.

It's pretty similar to Spotted Cow IIRC.

Saisons are a good summer beer. I’ve also been loving Boulevard East Sport when out golfing or floating in the pool. That’s probably what you are after!

Thanks for the suggestion, but looking that up, it sounds like it might be a bit too hoppy for me?

Have you tried Leinie’s summer shandy or Golden Road’s mango cart? Both are good easy drinking summer beers.

Boulevard Wheat has beene my summer beer of choice for years, but..... If you want to kick your party up a few notches Boulevard Tank7 is an awesome higher alcohol summer beer!

My favorite summer styles excluding IPA/APAs and sour/Berliner Weisse

1) American Wheat - try Bells Olberon, has a little bit of hop kick.
2) Hefeweizen - pick a mild clear to start with, Weihenstephan is hard to beat.
3) Kolsch

Absolutely. If you’re in the Des Moines area I would recommend Confluence. They always have a great variety of around 30 beers on tap and consistently make some of the highest quality beer in the state. Their Octoberfest is top notch.

Where have you found this in Iowa? Urbandale Hyvee? Love this as an alt. to Spotted Cow, and always pick some up when I’m in Wisconsin (along with staple and special New Glarus beers).

Lone Tree Peach Pale Ale - CO
Odell Brewing Peach Stand Rambler - CO

Both really light fruit flavor, not sweet, but I prefer the Lone Tree and I am not a fruit beer guy.

We also drink a lot of Pilsner in the summer. I prefer American to German and like Boulevard KC Pils.
