Getting wisdom teeth out...

I had all 4 of mine out about 7 years ago and agree with the rest of the posters who "went under". One minute they had just stuck an iv in my arm and there were 3 people in the room, the next minute there was only 1 person in the room and it was 3 hours later. I asked what time it was about 5 times. The procedure itself was no big deal but the recovery sucked. I don't think I actually had "dry socket" but some of the stitches didn't hold the best which was pretty painful. It took about a month before it was completely better.

Best to get it done now and have your mouth back to normal for football season. Good luck!
 
I woke up right at the end, as they were cracking the last tooth to get it out. I slept for 24 hours, and then was pretty sore for a few days. I got dry sockets, too, though, which really is pretty rare, from what I understand. You have to shoot water using a syringe into the sockets.

On my scale of surgeries... a little worse than sinus surgery (which is cake) or a root canal, but much better than major head/neck surgery. I'll give it a 3. :rofl8yi: My oral surgeon (a guy here in town) looked like Kevin Nealon, which made it kind of weird...

Good luck - make sure someone is there to drive you home!

I had mine out over break, both impacted. I planned it so it was the morning of the first day of march madness. Needless to say I ate soup, drank gatorade and watched hours of basketball. Make sure you do the salt water rinses.....it sucks big time but will pay off later.

First of all Angie, that sounds quite bad coming from a lady. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Anyways, I had all 4 of mine out my Jr. year of high school. Right in the middle of wrestling season. I was beyond angry at that one. I remember I got them out on a Friday afternoon, and then I came home, demanded Orange Sherbert, and then I woke up, puked, went back to bed. Next thing I know, it was Tuesday. Apparently, I woke up every 8 hours demanding my pain killers because I couldn't move my jaw whenever I woke up. I got dry sockets in 3 of my sockets, and it hurt to breathe until I got it fixed. However, from what everyone else has said, I think I got the short end of the stick there. My doctor/dentist couldn't beleive I went through 2 weeks of Hydrocordone in 6 days. However, I don't remember any of that, and I took exactly the "recommended" dosage. (1 pill, every 6-8 hours). I lost a few days of my life, but I dropped 15 pounds from not eating, so when I made it back to the mats, for once, I had to gain 10 pounds! That was the best part of my experience.

I seriously doubt anyone else could ever have the bad luck I did.

Oh, yeah, I forgot that I puked, too. That was awful, because everything hurts so bad already. Again - I don't think that's normal, either, much like Cyclone62 said.

Had mine out 3 years ago. I think the longer you wait, the worse they are, but mine was a breeze. I ate soup that night and ate anything I wanted the next day. All I had was a puffy face, but no pain at all and didn't have to take much for aspirin the next day. I have heard horror stories though. My cousin had hers done a few years before me and one side of her jaw was numb for a month because they nicked a nerve or the root had grown into it or something like that. Not to scare you though :wink0st:
 
I had mine out a year ago. 3 were erupted, one was "impacted" - actually it was almost completely out but there wasn't enough room for it to come out all the way. The oral surgeon sat me down and started talking to me about his son's soccer game or some such thing. I remember wanting to respond to him and the next thing I knew I woke up in a room full of other people all looking like the Godfather.
I took my pain meds that day and half of the next and then had to stop because I got tired of being tired. I was a little light headed from laying around for 2 days straight, but other than that I was fine. Food stuck in the sockets sucks, but I never used a salt water rinse - only my little syringe thingy. Took a while for the sockets to heal over but over all it wasn't a bad experience. Guess I got lucky.

After every meal wash out your mouth with warm salt water and don't brush your teeth for a few days. I also recommend keeping Ice on your mouth as much as possible... it helps a lot. I didn't even use the extreme pain killers just the ones that you can get over the counter! I wouldn't worry about it, a lot of people make it sound a lot worse than it is!

Liten the 18 yr old. wash out your mouth , your vapors will kill. And Ice will become your friend (and not with whiskey).

Well I had it done last Wednesday, and I'm happy to report everything went really well. They started me out with some nitrous oxide, which was really cool (never had it before), then put an IV in me and I was out. I woke up "a few seconds later" and they were all done. After the novacaine wore off, I felt pretty good...a bit sore, but no real pain, and not much swelling. I had soft foods for a couple of days, and then I had McD, Wendys, wings, etc. It was definitely not anything to get worked up over, that's for sure.

My dog on the other hand was not so lucky...he was neutered the day before my teeth were out, and wow he had it rough!! :eek4wd:
 
Make sure to use the gauze well. I didn't change it out and on the car ride home obviously was swallowing small amounts of blood. When we got to Walgreens to pick up the meds I walked around feeling sick and my mom went in to pick up the meds. I didn't make it 10 feet and threw up pure blood right in front of an old lady sitting in her car. She got out of there pretty quick. Nothing like a 6'5" guy throwing up blood right in front of your car to put a scare in ya!!!
 
I had all 4 pulled at the same time when I was a sophomore in High School. 2 of them were impacted.

They did it the old fashioned way. They didn't knock me out. No nitrous just 8 shots of novacaine: 4 in the roof of the mouth, 4 in the base. They had a nurse hold my hands. I almost broke hers when they inserted the needle. I could still feel the oral surgeon taking the teeth out and there was this horrible noise of him digging them out. The best part was that they gave me dissolving stitches so I wouldn't have to go back and get them pulled out.

My cheeks were swollen and had some gauze in my mouth the minimize any bleeding. When I felt like eating (which wasn't often) it was soup.

Oh those medieval days of dentistry. I may as well have asked for a good blood letting to drive away the evil spirits...
