It's a kind of apples to oranges but who hated Ed Gagnier during basketball halftimes. NO ONE. You need someone endearing. Everyone said "Hi Ed" when he said hi and everyone recited the sponsor "Benson Motors".
The host played to crowd and crowd played back.
It's way too early to see if that will ever happen but I just don't see it with the over the top and exaggerated act.

The guy after Ed (his name was Lou) tried to immediately copy Ed's act and it didn't work nearly as well. Not sure what they do now, I haven't been to a game in Hilton since ~ 2006.

Just finished listening to Blum and CW. They spend about 5 minutes talking about my exact same point. Go back to beginning of this thread. People were awful. That doesn't mean every single one. So I guess I'm just as much of an ass as the two people who bring us this great content.

Honestly I found this segment of their pod pretty off-putting.

I mean, from the start it misrepresented 99% of the complaints about this as if they were attacking her and not the role she was in. Then we got told "they're doing this for the fans to make it less boring", but then got told "well we have to do this for the money".

If you want to say that the ad read time is necessary, I get that. But don't try to spin it as something positive for fans when most fans find this kind of in-game host to be a negative that takes away from the other things that make cfb great. And certainly don't try to deflect criticism of the AD's decision to have this role by berating an audience as if they're personally going after her. No doubt there are some idiots who are making sexist remarks and ****, but that's not the vast majority who were complaining about this Saturday.

And yes, ISU may feel it has to do these things for the ad time, but that comes at a cost, and if that cost is decreasing the in-game experience there are other potential costs ISU may pay for that down the road.

experience in media -> model -> wife and mother of former player

Pretty great choice for a gameday host if you ask me...
This in game host thing feels like ISU took what Iowa does with Laura Vandeberg and came up the the K-Mart version of it. Hopefully it continues to progress, as I bet it is something that is here to stay, but it was not a great start. They need to find better things for her to do during the games as others have mentioned.

Laura knocks it out of the park in pretty much every category as the above pointed out. Right or wrong (like it or not) looks have something to do with it as well. She also is more smooth and fluid with her delivery.

The whole model of how ISU hired this person needs to be evaluated (Hawk fan, random person per say, etc....).

Overall hopefully she can continue to grow into the role as it has to be a tough job.

Ed is an awesome guy, know him personally.

Know we need TV timeouts, but why not have students (NIL) tape spots. The spots brought to you by the advertisers. Some of us like to hear about ISU and the students.

This right here is the answer.

Tell those corporate advertisers to hire our athletes to be in their ads and then play them during the breaks.

Simple and works for all involved.

And this is what is the most annoying about all this. People fully understand the reality of getting ad revenue, and those justifying this gameday host idea as if THAT is what raises the ad revenue and what sponsors want.

No, sponsors want ISU to come up with something interesting that gets attention and engages fans in a positive way. And random message board people can come up with better ideas that I am confident are dirt cheap to do, will be positively received by the fans AND sponsors.

I remember Cenex man, while dumb, I knew it was to make money and it was just a quick announcement about breaking the 20.

If it’s done at least at okay levels, it wouldn’t be mentioned. This last week was like being back in HS and having that one student who yells and demands to have your attention when you first say to yourself, man, this kid is annoying.

Fans at the game are more likely to pay attention to ads and promotions with ISU athletes in them. We have some great athletes and they have great personalities so we should be show casing them.

Smile cam with Audi

Flex cam with Beau Freyler or Conrad

etc etc

It really isn't that hard

The Wild has a fun game of "this or that." They pre-record it with a player asking them silly questions like "chocolate or vanilla," "Starbucks or Tim Hortons," "Waffles or Pancakes." You could easily film a bunch of these and have them in the can. Get someone to sponsor it. Boom.

This is what Audi does on her mic’d up segments on women’s basketball social media. One that I remember was asking players their favorite hype song. She is so funny, her reaction to Kelsey Joens and “Party in the USA” was great

The bolded is where there is a disconnect. We have a lot of very vocal fans who said our in-game experience was either nonexistent or outdated. There were loud calls for more entertainment. There are a lot of fans who hate the marching band. I'm sorry, but if you hate the band, you don't *get* college football. The AD reacted to those fans. They simply missed the mark on what they were asking for.

If it was up to me, you'd get a few dumb games for the fans to play during timeouts. Otherwise, let the band play. Let the cheerleaders lead a cheer. Let the dance team perform. Play a stupid Jimmy Buffett song. Whatever. But let's not act like there weren't people asking for more in-game entertainment.

The simple and easy solution, especially when the video boards get redone, is to put other games on during timeouts. Get the rights, find a way, get it done.
Yep. Chiefs do this a lot with highlights of big plays from other games. A little easier for NFL teams I'm sure.
