Friday OT: Surprise hobbies

Watching Cytown webcam. Wondering if the lots will be ready in time for the opener at the end of the month.

Summer is usually fishing and more specifically Kayak Fishing. My daughter and I each have pedal Kayaks and go quite a bit. We have a decent sized no gas motor lake near us that has some really nice fish in it, especially bass. They can be tricky to catch, but that's part of the fun.

Colder months I gravitate towards my slot car track. It's pretty big, taking up a 10' x 18' footprint. It's a 3-lane, 1/32 scale track that I built it all myself with MDF, a router, paint and copper tape for the electric pick-ups. It's an analog track, but still has computer timing and scoring and has a feature that uses fuel as you do laps, so eventually you have to come into the pit lane and re-fuel. If you don't and your car runs out, the power to your lane shuts off and you have to go retrieve your car an manually put it in the pit to re-fuel.

It's a toss up of what I enjoy more, racing or adding scenery. A lot of the figures around the track I have sculpted myself, the pit crews and safety figures mostly. I am now running low on space though for adding more "Scenery" It's pretty full of stands, fans signs and other stuff.

I do collect a lot of cars as well. Usually buying 3-6 every winter. They are fun to tinker with. I usually buy 3 of each kind of car and mess with them until they all have equal lap times, that way when others come to race they aren't at a disadvantage of grabbing a slower car. You can see pictures on facebook if you google "Heiser Speedway"

I started during covid trying my hand in the kitchen with cooking. Ranged from homemade pizza to even making my own sausage(probably a joke there somewhere). Ended up enjoying it so much that I kept with it

Never had what I would call a hobby. Those always felt to me like a job you have to go do in your free time.

Growing up, I was influenced by the humor of Gary Larson's Far Side and the writing style of Dave Barry. I started drawing single panel comics with the intent of putting my stuff in a newspaper someday. Fast forward to my adult life and the newspaper is all but dead. I stumbled on some of my old comics a few months back. Drawing is not my forte and it definitely shows on some of them. Still, some made me chuckle.

I have a goal someday to write and publish a book. If I get that done, I may just randomly throw in a couple pages of my favorite comics. It won't have anything to do with the book, but I'd still like to do it.

Yeah but unlike your job (for most people) you are supposed to get joy and satisfaction from it. Big generational difference in how people view hobbies now a days.

My job(s) gave me joy and satisfaction (along with the headaches and frustration), but I was intrinsically motivated to find them so, and content with sometimes there being more yin than yang.

Just the idea of not being able to do nothing without guilt or obligation is one of the great secrets of life, I'm thinking. Especially in modern times.

I like quiet outdoor methodical activities.

Paddling, fly fishing (including tying my own), hiking, camping. I have a general goal with all of them to make it more simple and cheaper with different hacks about every year.

I really don't have a lot of desire at the moment to do any traveling to do these things. WI has plenty of spaces for it and Iowa does too when I visit.

I find sitting still sort of stressful, which is why I like to have hobbies - I think it's really personality-driven. While I can occasionally just plant and do nothing, I get restless after long. Volunteer work and hobbies fill those holes.

I volunteer, but I don't regard that as a hobby.

Buying every flavor of potato chip I can find. I probably have 200 bags of chips in my current "collection", and ~70 different flavors. Sometimes I eat them, but you can't eat your chips and have them too so mostly they end up in a closet until my wife throws a bunch away. I've gone to pretty much every ethnic grocery store in the DSM metro and it's always interesting to see how diverse the food selection is compared to standard American grocery stores, plus I always look for new chip flavors when I travel.

I'm a sucker for anything with huge variety and also for limited time only so I also like to always order beers I've never had before / can't find regularly, and I end up trying almost every limited time menu item that fast food restaurants release.

Nor do I, I tried to separate it in the subject there.

That wasn't meant to be condescending in any way, btw - not being able to relax ever is a problem. :/

I've started collecting (and wearing) tshirts that were worn in movies and TV shows that I like. Not the actual shirts that were worn in the films, obviously. But you can find replica print versions of most of them online pretty easily. So far in my collection I have:

- Spicoli's "Colt 45" shirt from the final scene of Fast Times at Ridgemont High
- the "I Ate a 96er" shirt John Candy won in The Great Outdoors
- a long-sleeved "Ampipe Football" tshirt from All the Right Moves
- the "Surf Nicaragua" shirt Val Kilmer wore in Real Genius
- a "Camp Northstar CIT" shirt worn by the camp counselors in Meatballs
- the light blue "Win Rocky Win" shirt from Rocky II
- a "Rose Apothecary" shirt from Schitt's Creek
- a white "Welton" hoodie from Dead Poet's Society
- the shirt with Richard Pryor's face on it that Jonah Hill wears in Superbad
- the Michael Scott Fun Run shirt from The Office
- the Stovington Eagles shirt Jack Nicholson wears in The Shining

Many more on my running list.
Check out 6dollarshirts. com

I have ordered some cool shirts from there, including the "Don't Hassle Me, I'm Local" shirt from What About Bob

Yes, of course. My point is that being able to "do nothing" is also about being guilt-free when we do relax.

Hey guys - just a question. I will be out of the country the next couple weeks, would somebody mind falling on this grenade and posting Friday off topics for the next couple of weeks? It obviously could not be less of a big deal if it’s missed, but we are closing on the start of the season!
I can throw up a Friday confessions if you want.

Excluding the Big 12 tournament since that’s practically a home game, I have never seen Iowa State win a road or neutral site game in person.

Is there a worse loss that traveling to see your team lose?
That was my family until kinnick 2 years ago.

Don’t know if this is a hobby but I like to learn how to do things, even (maybe especially) odd things. Probably why I usually move from part time job to another. I learn the business or the main part of how that area works and I move on.

I used to read financial statements for an investment lady, I geek out on those things but she changed jobs and is with a bigger firm that has their specialized individuals do that now.

I guess I define a "hobby" as something you do for pleasure, not financial gain. There were two that I spent a LOT of time on, but both have fallen prey to the damn arthritis in my hands. Piano was a way to relax, to sooth my soul, to express sadness, to pound out frustrations (Danse Macabre is an excellent choice when you're pissed off - lots of pounding chords!). The other was needlepoint. I have several large tapestries that I stitched, and I have several more "in process", but it's really tough to hold the needle very long.

So now, I suppose my hobbies would be travel and geocaching. Both take you out of your narrow space, and let you explore new places.
