Won a T-ball championship summer after 2nd grade that would probably be my first...used to attend Coe College's basketball camp but I can't remember when I started that...they always had at least certificates for participants.

I know in 3rd grade I won a $50 certificate for an entrance into this 'Say No To Drugs' thing where only a few people won. We made a cartoon or drawing depicting how bad drugs were. They had some form of 'ceremony' for it and my entry was also included in this book.

I think I still have that book somewhere in my childhood home. That would be interesting to find.

Used the $50 to buy Super Mario Bros. 3. That's crazy that Nintendo games cost that much. Worth it.

Won the Forest City tricycle race for the bicentenial, so I was 4. I was unfire. Got cash, and some reflector (what farm kid needs a reflector for his tricycle?).

I still remember the 2 words I missed in regionals:

precede (I spelled "proceed" because the word-giver said PROceed, and I didn't bother asking for a definition. Everyone with me that day heard the same thing, too. I'm still ticked.)

barbecue (I spelled it "barbeque", and the commies in charge didn't allow the variant at the time. Now I live in KC and see daily reminders of the way the system failed me.)

My missed word was "soliloquy." I had not yet read quite enough Shakespeare in 8th grade.

I think I got a 2nd place trophy in the Mahaska County Fair bubble blowing contest. The first of many 2nd place trophies.

I think mine was something similar at the "insert small Iowa town" Days.

I think I placed in something biking related (complete a course as slowly as possible) as well as the long distance egg toss.

I think my first non-espn the ocho'ish trophy was in track.

i know I was 10 because it occurred the morning after the OJ car chase. We were camping with extended family in NW Iowa and one of my cousins was doing some race in town, so I decided to join. (What do 10 year olds run, a mile at most?) I placed 2nd in my age group and got a trophy. I think it's still in a box somewhere.

Funniest trophy I ever got was my first year of tennis (again 10-11 age range). I got a 4th place trophy. There were only 4 people in my division.
