Friday OT: A game to remember

Okie State Paul Rhoads Special in 2011. My college roommates (UNI) were throwing a rager of a party in the house and in the middle of it all was me sitting in the living room watching the magic unfold. I remember towards the end, the party had mostly taken a pause as most in attendance had stopped to watch as well. I don't remember much of what happened after the game, but woke up with my hair dyed red.

Very similar for me, I was in grad school at Ohio State at the time. At a party that Friday night, I was the one who was hovered over the TV that had it on (only sporting event happening at the time) and as we came back, and the game got very interesting, the whole place made their way in and fully invested into the Cyclones. When Woody tumbled into the endzone, the place went nuts, beers went flying, it was as if the whole party became Cyclones that night, even if just for the evening. The bars the rest of the night got a little blurry...

I have so many but the most important was a game that never actually happened. 9/1/18 against South Dakota State, Deshaunte Jones scores a touchdown on the second play of the game and then canceled due to weather. Tailgating during the delay I met my now wife for the first time.

Remember when Iowa State just had to beat Kansas to advance to the Big 12 FB Championship game? We had a couple of friends who were getting married that day - both Cyclones - so we were at their wedding. There were a bunch of his terrible hawk family who were monitoring the game in the sanctuary during the ceremony and put up a big cheer when Iowa State lost - during the ceremony.

Effing hawk fans...

I was in Boston in 1997 for my job and I was single. I was at a downtown bar watching the Iowa State-Wyoming debacle. A girl started talking to me. She was with a group of friends. She invited me back to their hotel. She had a boyfriend and then had second thoughts of...you know... and I ended up leaving the hotel and going back to my hotel where I slept alone.

I have two different sets of friends where I relate their wedding to an Iowa State football game. We had friends get married the day of the Nebraska/Iowa State 7 turnover game. We also had friends get married the day of the win at OU.

Both followed almost the same set of facts, where the end of the game lined up almost exactly with when we were supposed to arrive at the wedding. I remember the wife being less than thrilled with me watching the end of the game having not made any effort to get ready for the wedding and basically throwing on a golf polo and khakis on my way out the door as the game ended. She was probably also less than thrilled with my level of intoxication.

This is a crazy one.

The 2010 win @ Texas. I was in KC as a groomsman in a wedding. We had the 11am game on in the hotel room as we were getting ready. Meanwhile the bride calls off the wedding mere hours before the ceremony. All our buddies come over with cases of beer to console our friend. I'm the only ISU fan of the group and trying to keep back my joy at the game unfolding. Once the game ended I had to sneak out in the stairwell to cheer and call an ISU friend to talk about the game. I was basically Willy Mays Hays in Major League after he survived the cuts.

We still ended up having the wedding reception that night because it was all paid for. It all ended up great because my buddy dodged the crazy girl and is now happily married to someone better. I will never forget that Cyclone game.

It was 8 turnovers, but thanks for giving me an opening to post this...

:) ;) :D :p :chris:

One of my sons auditioned successfully for the All State Band the day of the hilarious eight turnover 9-7 win over Nebraska. Just had a flip phone at the time, but we signed him out to ride home with us instead of on the bus so we could go celebrate his audition and when we turned on the radio, it was the icing on the cake. Great day.

I watched Tinsleys layup not go in in 2001 from a foam party in Panama City Beach in Florida.

I watched the Iowa football game in 2002 from the Dubuque Country club. My friends had a wedding reception there and I snuck away and watched the game with a bunch of golfers. Only one other Cyclone fan there. I walked into the room and someone asked who I was rooting for I said something along the lines of “Go State!” And this guy at the front of the room stood up and was like “get up here! I buying you a drink”. And then of course we watched ISU come from behind 24-7 to winning 36-31.

My wife's grandmother had just passed (long life - nothing tragic) so we were in IL at the time. I remember alternating between watching some of this game live and checking ESPN Gamecast on my phone. While I was checking my phone, I was wondering if the ESPN app was glitching since I kept seeing "Nebraska Turnover" on the updates.

I may never say this again, but that was a great time to have a die-hard Husker fan as a co-worker.

Deplorable behavior, yet not surprising.

Fairly forgettable game, but I got my dog the night before the Iowa State - Kansas football game in 2015. I remember staying home from tailgating to hang out with our dog.

I was bar hopping and drinking heavily when Iowa State beat #2 Oklahoma State. Didn't see that one coming. Last time men's basketball won in the PHOG, I was drunk (again) on the BRR ride. Everyone in the bar went nuts.
the OKSTATE game, several couples (iowa staters) were at at dinner party and we paused the game, but didn't record it during dinner. Missed the whole thing.

Iowa State/Iowa game in 2019. Wife and I had just spent all day traveling to Ireland for a two week trip and with the time difference, the game didn't kickoff until 9pm local time in Dublin. By the time the game ended around 3am Dublin time, I had been awake for dang near 24 straight hours and to go through all that and have it end the way it did was a brutal start to the trip. Had the trip of a lifetime in Ireland and I still associate that loss with it.

Ten of us were in Barbados during a cruise. We found a beach bar / restaurant and the manager graciously found on the satellite the ISU-UAB NCAA mens game in 2015. Could not be better on this island paradise. Later in the game one of our group basically fainted, tended to by a nurse among us. Concerned about her (she was fine) we kept an eye on the game. We lost one we should have won, Fred’s last game. That game and friends illness tainted an otherwise beautiful day on the beach.

There are 2 bowl games I remember being sick as I don't get sick often (knock on wood). First one was at the 2001 Independence Bowl. Pretty certain I got food poisoning at the game from a turkey leg I bought at the concessions as we didn't tailgate or drink before or during the game and it wasn't till after we got back to the hotel and were ready to go somewhere the nausea hit me and I spent the night in the bathroom throwing up.

The other was the 2018 Alamo Bowl. Glad I didn't go because the day before the game I got some kind of flu or bug that had me running hot and cold for 3 days straight. Every night I thought I broke the fever as I would wake up sweaty and not have a fever in the morning and feel just fine then by mid day I would start to get the chills again and pop a fever over 100. I probably slept through half that game because I felt like crap so I am glad I decided not to go as I probably would not have been able to.

One other game that I always remember is the 2006 Cy-Hawk game in Iowa City I had to go attend a wedding in Nebraska that day and remember having to go into the wedding when ISU was still in a close game in the 2nd half. The couple were big Nebraska fans and that night happened to be the Nebraska at USC game and the wedding party was MIA several times during the reception because they were in the bar watching the game. Told my girlfriend (eventually became my wife) there was no way in hell we'd have our wedding during football season as this was a prime example why you don't. We had a May wedding so at least she agreed with me about that :)
