Friday OT #2 - S****y Music You Can’t Quit

RHCP were one of my favorite bands when I was in my late teens and early 20's. I find them kind of ridiculous nowadays (well, I find Anthony Kiedis ridiculous - still love the band) but I'm going to see them tomorrow in Minneapolis and it should be a nostalgic blast.
That will be a blast. I will admit that I am a little surprised that they are still playing stadiums.

What is music that you know is terrible, but you absolutely cannot quit? Maybe sort of guilty pleasures.

I have an abiding love for The Bee Gees, Hall & Oates, and Billy Joel, and do not care how uncool they are.

What are yours?
I've seen the Bee Gees (1980) and Billy Joel (1985 X 2) in concert.
I didn't know they were un-cool!

Rancid had a much more “punk” image, but their genius was in writing massive pop hooks.

They were to punk what Nirvana was to grunge (pop songs dressed up in a harder image).

It isn’t an image, though, those guys were/are the real deal. I saw them on the AOCTW tour. Venue security was ridiculously overzealous, and halfway through the show, Tim started yelling at one of them. “Hey man, take it easy. Easy, man. TAKE IT ******* EASY!” At which point, Tim, the rest of the band, and their entire crew came off stage to throw hands with the security crew.

Simultaneously the most awesome and terrifying concert experience of my life.

The music was still more based in big pop hooks than it was hardcore punk.

If you just heard Rancid’s music and were shown a picture of Green Day and told that was the band you just listened to, you wouldn’t bat an eye.

Thanks to magazines, I knew what Rancid looked like long before I heard a note of their music. I expected it to sound much more hardcore.

As a fan of all of these bands… how dare you include Rancid on this list!

Back when Spotify was more interested in being awesome than profitable, the algorithm sent me down a mid/late 90’s “alternative” rabbit hole. “Based on what you’ve listened to, would you like this?” Yes I would!

Good lord, some of the stuff that they would play on the radio… Paw, K’s Choice, Marcy Playground, Jimmie’s Chicken Shack… I could very literally make better sounding records in my office today. Utter garbage. I love it all.

Shout out 93 K-Rock and 101.9 The Edge for putting this questionable nonsense on the air.
Lol, Jimmie's Chicken Shack and 101.9 The Edge in a single post. That takes me back to the Pat and Scott Project days. Appreciate the wonderfully specific nostalgia trip that brought on.
