Friday OT #1 - That's Not A Thing

images

Manual transmissions and lead sleds
Cars, houses, and stores that didn't have air conditioning (forced personal interaction, couldn't cocoon)
Drive-in's with car hops
Cigarette commercials
Friday night boxing
TV Westerns
Channel selectors on the TV, that clicked and had to be done manually on the set
Console TV's
Toys in cereal boxes
Cracker Jack's
TV test patterns when broadcasting ceased at midnight
Fence rows and waterways on farms, that were full of pheasants
Ability to buy guns by mail order, ie Sears, Montgomery Wards, JC Penny's all of which will soon disappear
Comedy/variety shows on TV that weren't just promo tours for guests' latest movie or whatever
Newspapers

How about the playing of the national anthem with patriotic videos and images running in the background at the end of the broadcast day? Now we get Extenze infomercials.

The way I stumble into "things that aren't a thing anymore" is by making references that mystify my younger coworkers. My latest gems are referring to matching clothing as Garanimals (the Internet says that is still a thing, but most had never heard of them) and referring to a guy as giving me a Jeff Spicoli vibe (no one knew what I was talking about).

th

Sean Penn's greatest role, hands down.

I could write a freaking essay on this topic. Lots of mine have been said, I'll second the idea of drive in movie. Grew up going to those as a kid. Cartoons in general were so much better than what is out today. He-man, Thundercats, Duck Tales, TMNT all epic cartoons.

Crazy how music has evolved. Records to 8 track to cassettes to CDs and now digital form.

Those younger coworkers are missing an movie classic if they haven't seen Fast Times at Ridgemont high.

It's still around, maybe not in Ames?

Hmm

To be honest, I haven’t seen a brick and mortar Pizza Hut in ages. But I did hear that in big cities they were starting to deliver beer with their pizza. So maybe when I am on vacation I’ll look one up.
