They will continue to wrestle off for their starting spots in practice but those won't be open to the public. I am sure there will be weights like 141 and 149 that will probably still not be 100 percent determined going into the first dual of the season. In the past, for example, 133 pounds with Ramazan and Redding. Coach had them swap starts to see who performed better in a live dual. That helped determine the true starter for the season but that was also with them going back-and-forth for a few weeks. There's also weights we can confidently say are solid like 165 and heavyweight.
Feels like all of the upper (165 thru heavy) are pretty set barring injury but the lower half will need sorted out for a few months.

I definitely agree, in regards to Terukina. He is very explosive and I feel like he would be well served by tuning his motor a bit higher during matches. Push the pace, make the other guy react quickly and he'll get sloppy. Terukina is pretty good at capitalizing on counters, but if it's a tight match hand-fighting and slowplaying is really playing with fire.

I feel Grice is similar to Terukina. He's very athletic and very explosive. He hasn't been in the room very long so I'm hoping it's just a matter of time before he buys into the program and kicks it up a few notches. I think of how it took Schuyler a year in the room to really hit his stride after transferring in from Buffalo. I'm hoping Grice gets there too as his ceiling seems pretty high.

I think the Frost boys a great example of how a high motor and high attack rate lead to success, regardless of natural athleticism.

I'm sure they're more athletic than given credit for, but I think they're a great example of getting the most out of your own ability. Really like the way they wrestle, so I'm not as disappointed as some to see them win.

I am hoping that because these guys are so used to wrestling each other and can better predict each other as of right now that, that's why we didn't see some guys open up more like we would've liked to. I like Terukina's style and I'm hoping we'll see more out of him once he's out on the mat during a live match with the competition.

Oh, they're definitely more athletic than most. There are just others you can tell have a more natural ability, yet they fall short in the face of the Frost's solid and relentless style.

I'm happy to see them win. Their style is by far what I would rather see on the mat.

They just win. Both ranked in the 200s but come in and beat the guys ahead of them with more accolades. Very impressive.

I have a feeling AE and Redding are already on their way down. AE is a brick house but very short. As far as Swiderski, I think part of the issue is the match last night was not the way his matches with AE turn out in the room. Not making excuses for him as he has to manage his anger as you could tell he was getting frustrated earlier in the match which didn’t help his cause.

Lastly, throwing the headgear shouldn’t be an issue because they shouldn’t be required. Get rid of them, please.

This. People can say one thing but no way he makes 141. He’s a brick shithouse at 149 as it is. If he lives in the weight room like I’ve heard, not happening.
People thought Redding would never make 33 last year, until he did. I thought he could and needed to last year and those thoughts haven't changed this year.

I happen to agree - or make them optional

not sure totally getting rid of them will ever happen in college in today's society.

Here are some of my observations after having a night to think on the wrestle off's

125 - Perryman is very close which is encouraging and he's the future for sure. However, IMO Kysen is going to be a top level contender and I'll predict he ends up on the podium.

133 - Evan Frost (I guess it's time for me to learn the first names of the brothers and which weight they're at!) Congrats to Evan. Grice had a nice early TD but after that it was all Evan. Grice isn't completely out of the race but Evan made a statement. Congrats Evan for a great win.

141 - Jacob Frost - For me this is the first real upset of the night. I really expected Redding to handle Jacob in a close match but I didn't expect Jacob to get the W. For those just looking at the score of 10 5. Keep in mind with the new 3 point TD this match was close. I expect Redding to keep pushing for this spot. He went for a last second TD that would have tied the match. IMO BOTH Frost brothers wrestled similar styles. They both wrestled aggressively, moved forward all match while keeping a steady pace that wore down their opponents. They are not super fast or slick but they are very methodical, powerful and hold great position the whole time. I'm super excited for the whole Frost family. I'm now much bigger fan of both and they are the future... maybe the future is now.

149 - Match of the night for me and it didn't disappoint. Honestly, I expected Casey to win this match and he came dang close to winning via a last second takedown. Judgement is still out for me on IF Casey has improved his mat wrestling. I just think we didn't see enough to judge his progress. He was able to escape so that's encouraging. I think the same holds true for AE. I will say AE is VERY quick and slick. He's also strong. Casey can end up being the guy but if AE is the guy he looks super strong on his feet. This match reminded me so much of last year when Real Woods beat Casey... AE got a quick early TD and then they pushed each other the rest of the match without either guy really getting close to scoring... Casey didn't really pernitrate and get to a leg until the time had ran down and he didn't have time to finish. IF Casey finishes that shot then he wins the match... Hence, he losses and throws a temper tantrum (that part does bother me). I'm excited to see AE wrestle someone who's good on top. I predict he can explode out from bottom much like Paniro does. Whoever wins the spot at 149 will be in the mix when March rolls around.

157 - Kraisser looked great.... Bring on Cody Chittum to give us a true insight on the hype. Either way we've got a hammer at this weight.

165 - Who doesn't love a fast Carr? (enjoy the ride folks)

174 - MJ looked dominant. He looks to have grown into this weight. He's got a very unique style that's fun to watch. Very funky and get's takedowns from very unusual positions. Great balance and body awareness.

184 - Naak vs Helgeson. This was a fun match. Both guys get a year to develop because of Will Feldkamp who should be the guy here. Naak looked very impressive in the first period but then spent a LOT of energy late in the first getting a takedown. He eventually ran out of gas but was able to hang on and win. Naak showed some great offense early on. Helgeson proved that he's not going to rollover and quit. He wrestled hard the whole 7 minutes and also has a bright future..

197 - I can understand why some fans would be disappointed in Julien's 2-0 win over Nando. Julien doesn't have a lot of offense from his feet. He's an upper body guy and everyone knows it. I'm predicting that he will win a lot of matches this year in similar fashion.

Hwt - Yonger looked the part but it's really hard to tell how good his competition was. I think he's going to be a terror this year at Hwt. It's going to interesting to see how he does against top level guys with size.

Overall I enjoyed the night and appreciate the opportunity to watch these matches.

That said, I cannot wait for the new facility to be done and I really hope we can watch the wrestle off's in the new building because parking during this is absolutely horrible. I'm guessing 6:30 at night is prime time for students to use the rec center and the parking lot is always full. The crowd was also huge compared to past years wrestle off's that I've attended which is great to see.

One comment I'll add to my post above is that Casey also looked bigger. He's obviously been working hard to get stronger and looks like a legit 149. He could continue to climb to 157 if he keeps adding on muscle. It's encouraging to see

I haven't posted in years, but I do have a couple of questions.

1) Is Cory Cabanban out of the picture at 133?

2) I feel that Paniro Johnson and Casey Swiderski would all benefit from using their redshirt this year. A year to mature both physically and/or emotionally couldn't hurt. It would probably benefit our lineup in the near future after Carr and Kraisser are gone.

3) Even though he won on Thursday, I would assume the plan is to redshirt Tate Naaktgeboren since we already have Feldkamp as heir apparent for that spot, unless Tate is clearly the better wrestler.

4) I'm "old school" in my beliefs, but I will always believe true freshmen will benefit from redshirting their freshmen year, so my hope is that happens to the fantastic class we had come in. Unless you go to Cornell, it usually works out best in the long haul for the wrestler.

Just my opinion and I'm not that "in the know" with the program like many on here, so whatever works out best for the team is fine by me.

Yes, i would say Cabanban is out at 133. Redshirting is not a given any more due to the NIL & transfer portal. No reason for both Swiderski and Johnson to RS. Yes, Naak will redshirt. He may wrestle a few varsity matches but will not go past 5 matches to lose RS.
