File Sharing (yep, again)

Better yet, download music legally and you'll be left alone by the RIAA, university officals, and lawyers.

Thanks for reading my post and realizing that I've deleted all download programs and only buy on iTunes now.

ok....so I just opened my iTunes to listen to some songs that I KNOW I uploaded directly from CD's or purchased from the iTunes store, and am getting a message that says "The song '(insert song)' could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" and I click "YES" which takes me to my computers iTunes folder with these four additional folders as options:

Album Artwork
iTunes Library
iTunes Music
and a text file

None of them seem to work. Any ideas? I KNOW that these are songs I either uploaded from CD or bought from the iTunes store, but none will play. All of the Limewire songs I had have been deleted completely from the computer.

That's why it says that. Wherever the files were stored before, it's looking for them there and isn't finding them, so it's asking you to go find them. I'd figure out where it's ripping them to and see if they are there. It's under I believe preferences. If I had my laptop with me I'd be able to tell you but I don't.

I'm not trying to listen to the LW songs, I'm trying to listen to songs that I loaded--songs that I did NOT delete or touch at all. They shouldn't have moved anywhere.

Either use iTunes and figure out where it ripped them to, or use the find command and search your hard drive on your computer if you know now the files are named.

You must have deleted/moved them. Look in the folder yourself - are they there?

I went through this morning and deleted all 286 songs that had been not been purchased through iTunes or loaded from my CDs. I deleted them from the library, and they're gone. All the others are still in the library.

Here's what I get when I try to listen to a song (sorry for bad pics, it's from my phone):

Song selection, a little "!" shows up to the left when I try to open it.

The question box that appears:

The options I'm given (clicking the iTunes 7.0.2 on the left side does nothing):

Selecting "iTunes Library" i get this (hitting Select doesn't resolve anything):

And finally, selecting "iTunes Music" shows absolutely nothing and I can't go any further:

First off I bet you have some file sharing turned on your computer that you are unaware of. If you don't know how to check what you have shared get someone who knows what to look for and have them disable anything on your computer that allows someone to see the files you have or even copy them over. File sharing was huge at ISU when I was there (98-02) and we even had a nifty search engine in Strangesearch: StrangeSearch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia but was eventually shutdown: StrangeSearch team pulls down indexing service - News beacause of the legal implications they could face for promoting illegal file sharing. You would be amazed at just how many people were unaware they had their entire C: drive shared. We'd be able to find everything from papers to instant messenger logs on some of these computers and usually someone would be nice enough to leave them a note or something on their desktop to make them aware of what they had shared.

But as mentioned take things out of shared folders is a good way to keep it from being discovered. ISU must be pretty pro-active now about busting down on that stuff compared to when I was there were people practically had tons of Gigs of movies and music and whatever shared for all to download.

I still wonder how the RIAA can completely crack down on some of these downloads because some artists even release free mp3 downloads of new singles for a short period of time sometimes. For instance I've downloaded a new single where you only had 1 day to get it from their official website so just how can they determine that 100% of the mp3 you have are illegal or not when there are free legal ways to get some of them sometimes.

You should be able to go to the Advanced Option in Itunes and consolidate your library, I believe this would search for all of your music files. I'm not at my home computer so I am not sure.

I'm taking it into the Apple Store on Friday. I've tried everything I can think of or know how to do without wondering if it'll wipe out something I really need. And every time I've gone to the Genius Bar with something they've been able to take care of it.
