This is the reason. Max is a great driver, but the car makes that big of a gap. Newey is light years ahead on the ground effect downforce. This is also why Ashton Martin, jumped up, they took Newey's number two, and magically have a car that is better balanced than everyone but Red Bull.

I will say this, I don't think we can fully judge the cars until they get back to Europe. The upcoming street circuits will give us some weird results. But RB appear to be way out front, if that isn't true the whole season, that will be a surprise to me.

Will be interesting if Merc radically changes their car during the year, or if they throw in the towel, and put all their 2023 development into 2024.

Looks like Alpine had a decent car, Gasly drove through the field, so that will help the midfield.

Someone get Williams some downforce.

Haas, why do you ever start a race on a harder tire. That was dumb.

Ferrari, will they ever stop blowing up? At some point this will hurt road car sales right?

Someone get Lando new car. Maybe a new team, kid deserves better than having to drive that piece of garbage. They may end up 10th this year.

Also I hope Piastri is loving his Zak Brown money. He has to be thining he made a bad move. A) I would much rather be Ocon's teamate than Lando, but I also would much rather drive an Alpine that can go from 20th to 8th than a Mclaren that will go from 8th to 20th.

I am rewatching season one of the Netflix series. It's really better watching it again now to see what has happened to F1 since the start of that series. Danny Ric was seen by most to be the next big thing, Everyone was kind of thinking Red Bull might have made a mistake signing Max to a long term deal and not paying as much attention to Ricciardo.
Williams was a disaster being run by Williams daughter who looked shell shocked at how bad that team was at the time. Renaud boss thought he got over on Red Bull by Signing Danny Ric and getting rid of Sainz. It's like if they all had a time Machine, they would all be shocked at what was about to happen with Red Bull and their driver's. I highly recommend going back and watching season 1.

When Piastri signed with McLaren there was no indication that Alonso was leaving, so his choice at the time was be a reserve for at least another year or more at Alpine, or be a lead driver at McLaren in 2023.

So maybe my timing is off, but I thought Piastri couldn't have signed before the Alonso events, because of his contract? So, you are saying he signed with McLaren prior to Alonso leaving for Ashton, which then makes more sense for him to do that. I am probably messing up the contract date in my head, but it was some weird timing of when he could and couldn't negotiate with other teams. And maybe he did do all that and Alpine determined it wasn't worth the PR hit to take a driver on. They wouldn't' have wanted him back once they got Gasly anyway.

I like McLaren, I have just soured on Brown. Especially since he did the same thing twice in two different leagues. The Indy car one was a fiasco.

I mean, from that first race, let's not overreact, but McLaren looked horrible. The only time it looked okay was when Lando was following Lewis, on a softer compound of tire. And let's face it that Merc isn't exactly the best thing in the world to be driving.

That portion was kinda funny. Looked like Hamilton, Alonso and Norris in a tight battle, but Norris was a lap down.

You're right, I'm wrong. Piastri signed with McLaren 7/4/22, Vettel didn't announce his retirement until late July.

Thats probably one of those behind the scenes things nobody knew. Vettel probably already informed everyone so they could make future plans.

It all went to a contract review board and they sided with Piastri and not Alpine. Alpine basically strung Piastri along from what I've read, not sending him an actual contract but a "terms sheet" and saying a contract would be coming. Meanwhile Mclaren offered him an actual contract to drive for them assuming they could buy out Ricciardo.

Just judging by the engagement of this thread vs the NASCAR thread it's obvious that F1 is pretty popular.

It was the same story with the 2022 version of the two threads. Sometimes I also wonder about an IndyCar thread too. I watch it sometimes but I don't make a point to watch like I do with F1, the Sunday morning races just work better for me. I really like to just get up in the morning, drink my coffee and watch the race before everybody else in the house is up.

Where are the main areas that the front runners are gaining on their rivals? An analysis of the telemetry data tells an interesting picture.

I'm really intersted to see how the next few races go to determine whether it's realistic to see some close racing by the middle/end of the season. Ferrari are obviously quick, but are continually hampered by tyre deg and, of course, reliability.

I do agree with the thought I've heard some places that Bahrain is about "worst case" circuit for the Ferrari considering how hard it is on the tyres and being extremely rear limited. So it'll be interesting to see if they are closer to Red Bull in some different situations. Also, Bahrain doesn't have much high speed corners, so we're not sure who's the quickest there.

Hopefully the gap narrows as teams develop and bring upgrades so that we can see some decent racing by mid-late season. Hard to see anything but Red Bull jumping out to an insurmountable lead however.

I used to be a huge Indycar fan. Stayed with it a little bit after the split, more so CART, because they had more of the top name drivers. I've tried to stay with it over the years, but their marketing is downright horrible. I think it's supposed to be better this year, with more races actually on NBC, but you have to actively search to find out when races are going to be on and how to watch it. And this is coming from a person who is still a fan.

That being said, I have to agree 100% with your on the timing of F1 races. I'm actually bummed when they are in the Americas somewhere, because it means a mid day race. I have to actively make time to watch and that usually means skipping doing something else that needs to get done. But the morning races could not be more perfect. I would just be hanging out having coffee at that time anyway.

Half of the allure to F1 is it's timing. I can watch qualifying in the morning on Saturday and the race on Sunday without much of a time commitment. Once golf season rolls around I'll miss it, but it's a two hour recording a can kind of catch whenever I want.

Verstappen's pit crew had him slowing down as well, managing tyres since he was so far out in front.
