ESPN Power Rankings...

Not one person at ESPN said”ummm we can’t put this out it’s so ridiculous “

i
Mean 0-3 teams ranked. Notre Dame beats number one and they fall in the rankings. What’s the point of it

Makes me glad that espn is laying off people.
I never relish in some average Joe losing their job. The vast majority of these layoffs at a place like ESPN are people making $70-$80k maybe at best. It's not people like Stephen A. Smith or Max Kellerman or (fill in talking head). Those guys are well off even if they were fired. Layoffs happen a lot to just middle class people with families and bills to pay.

Part of their problem:

So Iowa beats two really bad teams and all of sudden they are impressive and ranked 16th in this garbage. Hell Penn St. at 0-4 is still 23rd.

I appreciate 247 sports posting it so I don't have to give ESPN the click. Those rankings have a gross bias for Big Ten teams and a huge disadvantage for the Big 12. Iowa State aside, you're telling me a 2-2 Iowa team that lost to 4-0 Northwestern should be ranked higher than Northwestern? And an 0-4 Penn State is Top 25? Lol. They need to get their algorithm fixed because it's garbage. I guess you got to do what you can to get the Big Ten to the playoffs.

I've completely stopped looking at these rankings. They're 100% taking program prestige into account. That automatically makes it a trash product. Why ESPN even wastes their time with this is beyond me. They have to know that not a single fan takes this serious. It's like when Bleacher Report first started up.

“The ultimate goal of FPI is not to rank teams 1 through 128; rather, it is to correctly predict games and season outcomes. If Vegas ever published the power rankings it uses to set its lines, they would likely look quite a lot like FPI.”

You’re sort of right regarding “program prestige,” this system takes the past season’s results into account, might be why the ranking seems a bit weird this year with some teams having just played a few weeks and some with 2/3 of the season played. There were also very few non-conference games to connect groups of teams this year so it’s difficult to use analytics to compare for example Big 10 and Pac 12 teams that aren’t connected. (Also ISU and K-State losses are 1/4 of the entire Big 12 noncon results and aren’t helping the Big 12 here.)

I think you’ll see for example Michigan and Penn State continue to drop as the season goes on and drag down opponents like Indiana with them. Right now FPI sees them as part 0-4 or 1-3 team but also still part of their team from last year at 11-2 or 9-4.

Here, I’ll do all of you a favor.

PSA: The ESPN FPI is a computer metric (similar to Kenpom). It’s a predictive tool not a ranking based on polls (hence why it’s called an index and not a poll or ranking).

Fair point. Also, I predict that this tool is similar to toilet wand for schools that need their balls cleaned.

Besides tradition, I think these type of "indices" include a "pander" factor; schools in large population areas are plussed to attract the audience.
