Emmanuel Malou

He is either going to be on schlolarship or he isn't. I don't see how grayshirting would even work with basketball.

exactly, he gets into school or he doesnt. If he can qualify he will be on scholarship dropping bombs from 3 point land

I think he/who he talked to:

A) Was confused on the difference between a redshirt and a grayshirt
or
B) Meant he would walk on his first year in order to earn a scholarhsip or go to school to get academics in order before joining the team.

I'd guess A

With his offer list it seems pretty unlikely that he would be paying his own way for a year.

..... or go to school to get academics in order before joining the team....
Are there different academic requirements for playing on the team on a scholarship, versus a common admission into the school? I would think if you get admitted to the school, you would also qualify to play on the team on a scholarship. And if you DON'T qualify to play on the team, you're only option to get your academics in order would be JUCO or a different D1 school with weaker admission standards. Can anyone clarify this?

It's very possible that some of his classes in Australia wouldn't pass the NCAA clearinghouse while still allowing him admission into the University.

The only difference is the NCAA clearing house but that doesn't have anything to do with getting a scholly or not.

Right. He could still be on scholarship but would have to redshirt his first season like McLemore did (I know for different reasons, but same result) at Kansas.

If he wasn't on the team he wouldn't affect APR if he didn't qualify I guess.

McKay is only paying for 1 semester. A full year would be something you don't see very often from a guy with real offers.

Malou would also get instate tuition, right? You don't see guys like McKay with real offers take a semester without a scholarship either.

Few recruits are on scholly if they fail to get past the clearinghouse. Even being a known risk hurts in getting true offers.

Imo the most likely outcome, assuming the staff is as high on Malou as it seems, is that they over-sign with Malou thinking he is not going to get past the clearinghouse. If it is just a clearinghouse issue, does he need to gets his AA, or could he take some college classes and try again (reclassify)?
Perhaps the whole greyshirt rumor was a distortion of the insiders hearing he will be like McLemore/Taylor for KU in 2011-12. After having "fuzzy transcripts", the NCAA ruled McLemore ineligible. He was allowed to practice with the team and take part in team activities starting in the second semester of the school year."

Ok, isn't a grayshirt someone who attends the school part time with the understanding they will get a scholarship next year if eligible? In the meantime they aren't part of the team and don't get financial aid. It's not like it's something official recognized by the NCAA.

It's in football where they start them in the spring semester in January instead of fall. So they finish their career 8 months later and get 8 extra months to train for their freshman year. It also pushes that scholarship back to the next year.

Basketball it doesn't work because you play over both semesters and usually it's not as helpful to wait an extra year in basketball. Less physical strength development needed.

I wonder if he doesn't have access to other forms of financial aid as long as he is not an active player. I believe that back in Mac's time there was a football player from Ames (Kohler?). He was getting other forms of aid while he was a walk-on squad member. Later in his career, he had to choose between seeing the field as a special teams player vs giving up his financial aid. I'm not sure if the policies are still the same or if they also apply to basketball.
