Emmanuel Malou thread

I don't know if this is a shot at me, but I actually tweeted to Bilas about it this morning and he said if he's mistreated like Diallo was then you'll absolutely hear about it from him.

A little public pressure won't hurt. Be nice if it would come before they make a ruling, however.

Here's my question on this situation...Doesn't Iowa State have its own admissions folks and clearinghouse of sorts?, if so, and if Malou meets admission requirements into Isu than what's the point of having to involve NCAA? I know all athletes have to go thru clearinghouse but it seems redundant no?

Well for one, anyone can be admitted to the university, as long as you meet their academic standards. Kobe Bryant could enroll at Iowa St, but I think the NCAA may say something if he tries to play bball.

Not at all redundant. If you just open up the floodgates to saying that anyone cleared by their university is good to go, the academic part becomes even more of a sham than it is now.
You need someone theoretically impartial to maintain some kind of standard.

Thank goodness for the NCAA!

:pbaffled:

I just tweeted @ the Department of Justice about the Malou situation. You're all welcome.

I just laughed out loud, sitting by myself at a quiet bar in Washington. Not even going to try to explain myself. Bravo.

The only reason they did that is because the department of justice was getting involved

Why was the DOJ getting involved? Do you think that would have happened in a vacuum? I mean we are living in a world were Donald Trump is going to be the GOP Nominee because he drowned everyone else out by making and controlling the news each 24 hour news cycle. I hate trying to explain social/behavioral sciences to a board full of engineers.

There's no comparison between the camp ruling, which basically shut out thousands of kids in talent dense areas from schools outside of their geographical area, and a case where a 22 year old athlete who has attended 3 years at 3 different prep schools (two outside the US), and 2 years of Juco at two different colleges.

The Malou case will not control the media cycle.

Does this involve the compliance dept. at all? I don't know what they all do, and I wouldn't want to judge a group that I have so little knowledge of what they do, but I have heard how other programs supposedly really put the money out to hire lawyers and such to fight things like this.

I think them reversing the ban on satellite football camps proves your point.

The NCAA didn't reverse any decision they had made. They turned over a decision the conferences made because it was stupid. Essentially, they did exactly what they are supposed to do. Nothing was reversed. They simply said "Nope."

Doesn't have to do with his academic standing.

See what I mean. Everything is so literal. All you need to do is give them some cover in this case to devite from the letter of the rule. They work for all of the colleges, if they deviate they have to be able to justify it and media/public pressure is an easy one. They respond to negative press. They are reactionary. Donald tump is just an extreme example of how media matters.
