Dwayne Pierce Stepping Away From The Team

crappy timing for all parties

probably should've pivoted in the spring when he couldve landed elsewhere

Don't want to speculate on anything, but of course hope everything is okay.

From a basketball perspective, that's disappointing. He almost certainly wasn't going to see minutes this year, but I've always been high on him being able to fit in nicely with what TJ wants to do.

This just adds to the frustrations that have to come with recruiting HS athletes now days. If I'm TJ, unless I know I can go after and get 4-5 star guys, what's the point of even offering a developmental prospect like Pierce? Just go thru the portal anymore.

yeah, TJ has elevated the program where sub 150 HS kids are kinda a waste as they leave Ames never doing anything

Pierce
Hamilton
Eli King

lipsey the exception of course but he was always WAY underrated in HS

I think the reality is you need guys to fill out your roster. It's hard to sell a transfer on being the 7th guy off the bench. Unless you are elite, a freshman will likely just have to accept being a practice player for the first year or so.

True, just seems like fewer and fewer kids are willing to accept that role. Honestly Iowa State has never been good at retaining kids like this going back decades.

Since 2022, only 2/10 freshman are projected to or have contributed meaningful minutes. That DOES NOT include the McD's AA in the 23 class... (Milan and Tamin)

Meanwhile transfer the transfer classes have seen meaningful contributions from

2022 - 3/4 (Not counting CEO). THe "miss" was hurt his only season but expected the be starting PG
2023 - 2/3 2 super stars and a minor role player
2024 - 2/4 are projected to start, 3/4 will play "starters minutes", and 4/4 will be at a minimim #2 on the depth chart at their position...

Crazy how far HS recruiting has fallen.. I wonder if 2025 and beyond that starts to change once the COVID years of extra eligibility burn off.

Throw in Fish, although perhaps he will stick around now that he came back.

Demarion Watson is a good example of someone sticking around and paying his dues.
