Dumb Luck

The loto thread got me thinking...what's the biggest or best thing you have won in dumb luck fashion? I once bought a 5 dollar scratch off during lunch in college and won 1000 dollars. What's your story?

In the 60's the Benner's (later Giant) grocery store chain had a bingo game contest. Every time you made a purchase you received a bingo game marker. They had bingo cards for the markers. They also published a couple of them in the weekly newspaper ads. They had games for $1, $5, $20, $100, and $500. My sister and I were really into it and my father would stop and buy something (usually a gallon of milk - we had 5 kids at home and went through it pretty fast).

One point there were a few new game pieces and a new newspaper ad and we thought we'd won both the $500 game and the $5 game. Turns out we put one of the game pieces on the wrong game so only won the $5 game.

But that seemed like a huge windfall as my weekly allowance was only 50 cents.

(Cue the Seinfeld quote - "A Hershey Bar was only a NICKEL!")

I won a shotgun last week in a raffle I entered at a bar. Worth around $500. That's the best thing I've ever won and I've spent a lot of money at pheasant forever dinners.

I don't think that I've ever won anything by pure luck. Not even the $5 local whatever raffle. I don't even try much anymore so that could be part of the problem. It could also be some really bad Karma from some past life.

Got mistaken for somebody else in a bar that already paid for 3 pitchers of beer. They must of left...free beer for us. How "dumb" but...."lucky!"

Won an hour long massage worth about 60 dollars at a 5k. Just hearing the crowd moan in unison that they didnt win it was all I really needed though lol.

Made a half court shot during halftime of our HS hoops games for $200 when I was a Junior. We practiced most mornings before school, but still it was pretty lucky.

Not something I won but was able to score first class tickets to Hawaii for under $100 apiece because of a glitch.

I won a Williams-Sonoma dream wedding package valued at like $25,000 earlier this year. We got a wedding dress, 6 bridesmaids dresses, 6 tux rentals, 2 wedding bands & flights + a 5 night stay at an exclusive resort in Fiji.

That was pretty neat.

Good grief, I think you win the thread.

Won $1,000 from a radio station that would call a random area phone number once an hour and ask "What's your favorite radio station?" Give the station call letters, you win. Tween me was curious enough on a summer day to see who called, and ran down the steps to hear my mom repeat the question, stalling for time. Luckily, I knew the right answer.

I caught a t-shirt from a t-shirt cannon at a home ISU game once. XXL Golden Rules "Beat Nebraska" shirt. I wear a size L shirt.

Go me.

One more:

In line at a gas station in a small town in NE Iowa. Guy in front of me says something like "gee I'd buy a scratch ticket but I dont have any more cash on me".

Cashier responds that he'll spot the $2. Guy agrees that if he wins anything they can split the winnings (he had also put in a couple bucks).

Guy scratches ticket, $1000 winner. Lucky day for both of them.

Won about $500.00 in restaurant gift cards last year at a United Way raffle. Purchased about $40.00 in tickets, so a good investment for a good cause. Won a raffle a couple years before for the same cause, but the prize was pretty lame, movie theme (popcorn, Hot Tamales, and a sno cone machine).

I spent a decade of my life trying to win ONE cakewalk at our school's annual music & arts fundraising festival. TEN YEARS. ONE CAKE. Didn't win one freaking time. It could've been between me and one other person. Spin the wheel. Was my number called? Was I even close? Nope. Bullies that I hated went home with multiple cakes. I couldn't even win the damn two liter pop walk.

What about when it came time to pick names out of a hat to see who gave their class presentation first? Ooh- I won that one every freaking time. Was I prepared? Of course not.

I have no dumb luck. Gambling makes me mad. I hate Las Vegas.
