Dominick Nelson vs. Andrew Rohde

Cluff and Rohde seemed like huge swing and misses at the time but I think we came out on the better end of that deal.
cluff would have been a monster pickup, but he would have fit with JJ much differently than BB has. maybe it would have been as good or better. maybe. but BB has been such a good fit for a team that already has some high usage players.

Rohde was targeted early by the staff and literally one of their top targets. At no point was he ever NOT a major priority for this staff in the Portal...someone they really wanted and believed they needed. We would have (correctly) celebrated his signing and he would be very good as a Cyclone.

And no, Nelson was not a contingency. If we had the money, we would have taken both.
Where did Williams factor into the priorities?

he's going to be near the bottom of the scout sheet. teams will be way more concerned about other players. but they will definitely sag off him more and more. hopefully he can continue to cause havoc on defense and create transition opportunities.
I kind of feel that way about Hi-Z. Teams are going to put their worst defender on him, and he’s going to make them pay.

After watching Rady's Children Tournament here in San Diego the past couple of days, I came away with two observations:

1. TCU, with former F_ckeye, Brock Hardings, looks legit. Especially after they only lost to Michigan by 4 (at home) and seeing what Michigan did to the PE Tournament...
2. Andrew Rohde looked lost in a Wisconsin uniform...

Which led me to thinking was Dominick Nelson the fallback to Rohde? If so, fast-forward to present day and I'd take Nelson everyday of the week and twice on Sunday over Rohde. Further, while KT and Blake's play get a majority of the newcomer talk...I'm absolutely in love with Nelson's game. Dude just balls and has a knack for getting to the hole (something I was concerned wouldn't translate...).

Any other thoughts? Comments?
To early to tell, but he might end up with a love hate relationship with the fan base. Not really sure what he’ll bring to the table that Lipsey and Tourre don’t. Can see his minutes dwindle with a healthy Lipsey. Probably between him and Bateman at times and I prefer Batemans ability to hit an outside shot.
ISU has missed having a guy that can get to the hoop and make the defense respond to pick up a foul to at least slow things down if the opponent is on a run/has momentum.

Keyshon was known for that but he often just jumped into about 2-3 guys and lost the ball. People thought he was getting fouled because he'd end up on the ground but he wasn't going to get the call since he wasn't making them change position; Nelson has the length to create that change.
i agree, but the scouting report will be the guy never passes. He’ll make some plays, but will have us pulling our hair out at times. With Lipsey back, I think it’s a fight for minutes between him and Bateman. I like Batemans ability to hit a 3. Defense is a push. I can see limited minutes for him come conference season

Reminds me of when Marquis Gilstrap would get the ball back in the day.

Didn't really think about it. Just went for it.

Alright let's do this...

Nelson is a taller, longer Keyshon imho. A guy who can get to the rim anytime - no matter how improbable or inadvisable it appears to be.

Nelson I think being bigger can finish more 'traditionally', where Keyshon just had all those ludicrous tricks at the rim to get the ball in the basket.

Leroy Jenkins is a great comp for both of them :)

And you need that guy, whether he finishes or not, it forces defenses to help and recover and not just guard the perimeter all the time.

Hi-Z sounds like a nice NIL opportunity for a tshirt. He is our best cutter by far. Love that when he is on the floor with Jeff, BB and Toure how well they can drop a dime at the hoop to him for a layup

Seem like two pretty different players at least in terms of their offensive skill set.

Rohde's not been shooting it great yet for Wiscy, 29% on 4.0 three-point attempts per game.

Then that would open up other options on the floor. He needs to pick his spots and know when to take it or dish it. Hopefully in these upcoming buy games he can develop that because he has what this team lacks outside of Tamin.
Actually, I'm afraid it could limit options on the floor. TJ places priority on getting the ball in the paint. If the defense sags off Nelson, it clogs the paint for all our other guys (like Tamin's freshman year).

Hopefully, Nelson can hit enough perimeter shots in the future to prevent the defense from doing that. Until he does, though, I'd try sagging off him if I were coaching against Iowa State.

The jump in levels means Nelson needs to adjust his game. His aggressiveness is great, but he needs to learn he can't always finish or get FT's at this level against Big12 posts. He needs to learn there are times he needs to hit a short pull-up jumper or throw up a floater (if he has that shot).

I'd say Nelson has to make more 3's, but if the game situation dictates that, my guess is TJ will play Batemon instead.

The good thing, Nelson has the quickness and length to be a really good defender in TJ's system. So he should be OK offensively as long as he's the 4th/5th option.

People here are warping the truth with Cluff. He’s averaging 12 and 10 on a very good team, and is the 4th best player in the country by PRPG! on BartTorvik.

Buchanan is a good player and I’m glad we have him, and you can argue about “fit” until you’re blue in the face, but let’s be honest with ourselves here - Cluff is hands down the better player.

Cluff looks pretty slow in the Purdon't games I've watched, I think on defense it would be a similar situation to Dishon last year. But on offense obviously he's a good post.

I’ve never seen him play but is he better defensively? I know he’s a good rebounder, but does he have enough foot speed to play our style of defense?

I’d say BB is the better defender, at least how our system works. Cluff is good enough offensively you take him and work around it, though.

Cluff maybe the better offensive player but BB is the better fit.

A few things:

1.) Nate Heise and Rohde have very similar games. Heise > Rohde all day.
2.) I like that Nelson and Batemon have different skillsets. Nelson of course more of the slasher and downhill open court player. Batemon more of the spot up shooter. In more of the uptempo games I suspect TJ leans on Nelson. In the grind it out halfcourt tempo games you roll with Batemon to space the floor.
3.) Cluff is a great player. He also reprtedly cost well in excess of $1,000,000. Keep in mind Cluff is also a senior. Buchanan is a junior. He is going to get better and better. At this time last year, Cluff was playing in South Dakota no one had ever heard of him. Buchanan was a heralded 4 star and it is clear he is coming into his own at this level. Much like Cluff his junior year, Buchanan is becoming a household name around the country. Buchanan is the more athletic player and fits our scheme perfectly! Hasnt been talked about much but Buchanans hands are exceptional. Catches everything from Jefferson and Lipsey and finishes at such a high clip. Something that was beyond frustrating last year w Dishon.

Or develope a reliable jump shot.
