Dominick Nelson vs. Andrew Rohde

After watching Rady's Children Tournament here in San Diego the past couple of days, I came away with two observations:

1. TCU, with former F_ckeye, Brock Hardings, looks legit. Especially after they only lost to Michigan by 4 (at home) and seeing what Michigan did to the PE Tournament...
2. Andrew Rohde looked lost in a Wisconsin uniform...

Which led me to thinking was Dominick Nelson the fallback to Rohde? If so, fast-forward to present day and I'd take Nelson everyday of the week and twice on Sunday over Rohde. Further, while KT and Blake's play get a majority of the newcomer talk...I'm absolutely in love with Nelson's game. Dude just balls and has a knack for getting to the hole (something I was concerned wouldn't translate...).

Any other thoughts? Comments?

Nelson probably shoots too much. Kind of a black hole. But, this team probably needs someone that aggressive. If he can play defense just a little better he’s going to be a major asset off the bench.

I like that he is a change of pace from what we have. If shots aren't falling for others he will run through that wall to try and get a bucket.

I like how he is willing to throw caution to the wind, and to run the gauntlet again and again, but I worry he won't survive the season.

Toure's emergence reduces the salience of the matter, thankfully.
Yeah. Nelson fills a unique roll on the team. A guy who just attacks the basket with reckless abandon and is surprisingly successful doing it is a total curveball for opposing defenses. The emergence of Toure makes Nelson a better fit IMO.

This team was always going to need more athleticism, so in that regard alone, I'm glad we got Nelson. Upside is just so much higher once the light fully flips on for him in my opinion.

Nelson has good length and versatility. His length is a benefit on defense. His ability to handle the ball is huge with Tamin’s injury. At times he is a little out of control going to the basket, but it seems to fit on this team.

Nelson's been a nice surprise. Although I think he did lead the country in FT attempts per game last season? But to see that translate over to P-4 has been impressive. He's getting to the foul line a lot so far. And not just against the weaker teams. He's also good at finishing on the fast break as well. If he develops a reliable jumper, then look out.

I think he's pretty much a one trick pony, and Big 12 coaches will deny him the paint and force him to be a jump shooter. At least that's what I would do.

I think that definitely will be the case in the half court, but in transition, he is a difficult guy to get in front of and stop the ball. He has an ability in transition to attack the hoop with reckless abandon. It doesn't always look pretty as some shots atempts have no chance of going in, but in those situations he is drawing fouls.

ISU has missed having a guy that can get to the hoop and make the defense respond to pick up a foul to at least slow things down if the opponent is on a run/has momentum.

Keyshon was known for that but he often just jumped into about 2-3 guys and lost the ball. People thought he was getting fouled because he'd end up on the ground but he wasn't going to get the call since he wasn't making them change position; Nelson has the length to create that change.

Then that would open up other options on the floor. He needs to pick his spots and know when to take it or dish it. Hopefully in these upcoming buy games he can develop that because he has what this team lacks outside of Tamin.

Rohde was targeted early by the staff and literally one of their top targets. At no point was he ever NOT a major priority for this staff in the Portal...someone they really wanted and believed they needed. We would have (correctly) celebrated his signing and he would be very good as a Cyclone.

And no, Nelson was not a contingency. If we had the money, we would have taken both.

he's going to be near the bottom of the scout sheet. teams will be way more concerned about other players. but they will definitely sag off him more and more. hopefully he can continue to cause havoc on defense and create transition opportunities.
