I think Doc has done an outstanding job with this defense, especially with in-game adjustments. He recognizes what needs to be done and gets the players to buy in. I also have to hand it to CFH....during games you can see he is getting a lot of input from Doc, and CFH is listening. That's a good thing, imo.

CFH has always been a good listener from what I can tell. Year one Bobby Lutz certainly had an influence. I think the last couple seasons Otzelberger and Rutter had more say than most people realized. This year he has certainly embraced Doc and it's been a perfect marriage. I hope Doc is content in Ames for a while.

I've seen some people project Hogue as a backup next season. I think it's absurd.

I see Hogue this year and next as being a more defensive version of Niang last year and this. He doesn't get talked about a lot this year, but he's using these tourneys to make a name for himself and it will pay off with much more attention on him next season. He's cemented himself in the starting lineup next year. I think Naz and Thomas will fight for the two (if Thomas improves his shot over summer, I think Fred would prefer to use Naz like he has been this last few weeks) and Nader and McKay will be duking it out for one starting position. A lot of people had Hogue not starting next year, but I think he's more than earned himself a major role for this team.

I see Hogue starting next year, especially since McKay won't be able to play from day one. Hogue could improve his offensive game some too in the offseason, and if he does he'll be tough. I'd also like to see Thomas drive the ball more. He's a good overall player and what better way to give him confidence than to call on him to take the ball to the hoop?

If you look at how many close games we lost in the last two years versus how many close games we have won this year, you've got to attribute a lot of that to Doc. It's been good defense and clutch offensive plays. Also a credit to the leadership and testicular fortitude Kane, Ejim and Niang bring.

And people who thought/think Hogue will be a backup next year, remember before year two of the Hoiberg era when some people though Christopherson and Ejim would be backups?

Ejim used to take so much heat on this board. Not quite as bad as Diante back in the day (who's in the NBA now), but we really have a lot of idiots who post here. Callin it how I see it.

I also remember this type of post in late December, but replace Hogue with Thomas. You never know.

I just thought I had better start this thread congratulating Doc on the work he has been doing on our defense. He made adjustment after adjustment, and lectured and taught that whole game, especially on stopping Heslip which we were having some trouble doing. He also figured out how to shut down Chery who kept getting us with his jump shot. Amazing job of coaching, he and Hoiberg make a great team.

I couldn't agree more!! Gotta give Fred credit for first correctly analyzing the team's needs, then finding the right guy to fix the problem, getting him on board and being willing to set aside any feelings/ego (just like Rhoads with Mangino, IMO) matters regarding "sharing the platform" with a guy who had been a HC elsewhere and finding a way to manage it all into a very effective total team result. Doc is, very definitely, a huge key to the successes of this team. We need to find a way to keep him in Ames for many years into the future, IMO.
