Thanks for the replies.

IE Sweet Caroline, this isn’t a football tradition, but one of Eugene’s best known bars, Max’s Tavern, has people stand on the benches and sing Sweet Caroline before closing.
Max’s Tavern is supposedly the inspiration for Moe’s Tavern in The Simpson’s. Creator Matt Groening is from Portland and named his characters after Portland streets, but he went to Evergreen College, not Oregon. The Geoducks of Evergreen make U of O and Berkeley look like BYU and Liberty.

I was told that Mr. Skinner is named after Skinner's Bluff in Eugene...?

Overall pretty good breakdown of the matchup and respect for ISU, but also some lazy analysis that leans on recruiting ranking disparity rather than scheme/personnel fit/execution.

They must not have not caught wind of the Breece Hall quotable.

What are some of Iowa State’s traditions? Pre-game, after the third quarter, etc? What are some of the unique things us outside fans don’t know about?

One of the fun things I remember is after the third quarter of the 2012 Rose Bowl against Wisconsin they played Jump Around for Wisconsin and Shout! for Oregon.

Some of ours:
* The PA announcer Don Essig reads the weather report, ended by “as we all know... IT NEVER RAINS AT AUTZEN STADIUM!”
* They play audio/video of The Pick.
* The Duck (that’s the official name of the mascot, although I and many others prefer Puddles. Puddles was a pet duck owned by a fraternity in the 1930s who would come to games, but animal rights activists helped end the practice as allegedly Puddles was given alcohol) rides out on the back of a Harley to lead the players on to the field out of the tunnel.
* After the first quarter they play Mat Kearney’s Coming Home. A newer addition, and one that I’m not a huge fan of since it feels too slow, but lots of people like it.
* At halftime you used to be able to leave to go to tailgate or to the indoor practice facility next door to drink, but with stadium alcohol sales that is discontinued.
* After the third quarter we play Shout! since Animal House was filmed on campus after Harvard declined. Here is the video they play on the screen, it was made in 2014 to be a Nike commercial that aired after the Ducks won the national title so at least it’s getting some use. The fans really get into it. Last year our star LB Troy Dye really took over leading it, his brother Travis is the teams leading rusher this year.

Not a tradition, but the walk from campus involves crossing a pedestrian foot bridge over the Willamette River and then walking through Alton Baker park where Prefontaine used to run. Students, and adults, use the opportunity to chug some beers and smoke some doobies. I still remember a ~13 year old visiting Nebraska fan turning to his dad and saying “it really smells like skunk here” and I busted up laughing.

So whatcha got Cyclones?

I will attempt to not duplicate the other responses on this thread. .

Iowa State has a strong tailgating tradition with people always showing up hours before games. You can privately rent tents & there are corporate sponsors that host groups as well. There is a "spirit walk" held 2 1/2 hours before kickoff where fans have the opportunity to greet the team/coaches as they get off buses & walk to the stadium. The band/cheer squad & mascot Cy are also in attendance to fire up the crowd.

We have a Jr. Cyclone club & as of now, the kids are allowed to sit on a hillside in the stadium. There are also inflatables, face painting & activities for them outside the stadium prior to the game.

The band performs a "step show" (preview of halftime songs plus others, etc.) on the steps of the Alumni Center prior to the game. The Alumni Center is open to the public & offers a catered $ meal with pre-registration, ISU gear, bar, etc. It is a very nice facility.

The Iowa State Varsity Marching Band performs at pregame & halftime. A few songs: ISU Fight Song, Bells of Iowa State, "Don't Know the Words (lol), Cowbell. Other chants, etc: "I-S-U", "that's another Cyclone 1st down..", "Cyclone Power" chant

For almost every game, especially the big ones (such as in-state rivalries or games against highly ranked teams) students line up and wait to get the best seats. About 15 minutes before the gates actually open, the ticket operators at the student gates start scanning tickets and swiping ID cards so that the line outside thins out, and then people have to wait at the base of the steps instead of outside the gates. As soon as the gates are opened, there is a mad rush to get up the steps.

The cannon, operated by members of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, is traditionally fired after every Cyclone touchdown or field goal. Additionally, it has been fired on kickoffs and was formerly fired during the Cyclone Marching Band’s playing of the “Star Spangled Banner.”

One cherished tradition of Cyclone football is the ringing of the Victory Bell after each gridiron triumph in Ames. It has graced the Iowa State University campus for more than a century. The bell was originally used to signal changes in class periods and student curfews. It was moved to Clyde Williams Field early in the 20th century and eventually Jack Trice Stadium.

Sorry if this was too much information. Kind of depressing reminiscing about this topic. Bummed that we weren't able to experience these great Cyclone traditions this year.:( Guess it will make us appreciate them more next year!!

Go State!

Have the Ducks done their reveal yet, as to what uni they will be wearing Sat.?
If it's true that yall are going with Black jerseys it means that we've got to wear our White tops. (Fiesta Bowl doesn't want a Red/Yellow or Red/Green color scenario with jerseys)

We've already seen players breaking in their new Yellow cleats so that's a given.

Its either Yellow lids - White tops - Yellow pants - Yellow cleats
or Green lids - White tops - Green pants - Yellow cleats

So, we will be able to tell we are watching Oregon and wondering why they are playing Wake Forest in the Fiesta Bowl! lol. I was okay with the all blacks after the Oklahoma win until they lost in them in the re-match with Oklahoma.

What was once a novelty has become boring, not Iowa State and on a losing streak! Now, I want cardinal, gold and white or at least the white helmets and white pants with the black jerseys!

Let's Go State!
Victory for I-S-U!
Beat the Ducks!

This "Duck Fan Perspective" gives a good glimpse at a lot of the traditional fan/student experiences when Autzen Stadium was rocking. With all of that winning with Chip, the wine crowd entered the stadium with the higher prices in addition to changing the student-ticket allotment system from first in line to an online distribution. We used to have some great Sunday night campouts at Autzen to get our student tickets.

Have we? I presume B&Ws?
Yeah, slow, partial reveal so far. Most of us probably think it will be all-black, but could be some combo of black/white. I think we will have the black helmet, since they showed pics of them w/ the stickers. Outside chance we might get the Cardinal jersey I guess?

Hopefully they will give us full reveal later today or tomorrow.

I think this is where most ISU fans land with the black as well. Only a few vocal hardline traditionalists are anti-black-unis-everything-must-be-cardinal-and-gold. We love the black as an alternate but the blacks could be next level with some gold or cardinal trim around numbers or on the helmet logo

Even though Oregon has worn 100 different types of green as well as blue, orange, gray, pink, black, etc we also have some who want school colors.
Only the Penn State, USC, Bama crowd does that. Even Notre Dame has strayed, Michigan is wearing Jordan brand.
Here is one of my favorite black units, replace that metallic red with gold chrome/foil and it’s a sharp look.

I’ve heard that’s the case, Skinner’s Butte, because it kind of sounds like butt. If the fictional Springfield is Springfield Oregon like Groening said it makes a lot of sense. Springfield and Eugene are basically the same town. Some of the other nearby towns are spoofed.
The Jebediah Springfield statue is almost certainly the Pioneer Father statue on the Oregon campus that was ripped down during protests this summer.
Groening also did Futurama and this joke is pretty accurate.1C92FC23-6516-4A4C-B7CD-E78C1D81D6CF.jpeg
