I don’t think anyone thought Chizik was going to stick around for long. He was a huge splash of a hire, and an impressive get. I think the thought/hope was that he’d have success and move up, proving it was possible to win in Ames.

Exactly this.

The chizik hire was a statement of "Iowa State intends to compete nationally" and was also designed to juice fan financial support. There was a huge push for increased season ticket sales back then, and it worked. (Anyone else remember the ticket thermometer?)

I still don't know how this lineup...

Garrett
Staiger/Christopherson
Gilstrap
Brackins
Hamilton

...wasn't at least an NCAA tournament team.

Yeah, it wasn't going to be playing much defense, but it should have been able to outscore enough people to at least limp into some sort of postseason in the weaker version of the Big 12 back then.

I still remember asking (somewhat rhetorically but somewhat not) @Alswelk...

"Where the hell was this the past three years?"

...when DG made a particularly athletic, spectacular play at the rim that fall.

His response summarized it perfectly --

"McDermott told him not to."
Greg hamstrung that entire roster. Wasn't elite by any means or deep but it's crazy how bad he was.

Is DG the best player on the court when he plays with the team in practice? He’s got a decade of professional experience but on the wrong side of 35 now.
