Des Moines Register

What newspapers should have done is what the RIAA did when sites like Napster started popping up offering songs for free download - sue. Every time someone here - or any other message board/blog - posts a link to any newspaper article, it can be read for free.

If newspapers had charged for their online content from the very beginning, maybe they wouldn't be having the circulation problems that they're having. Maybe they wouldn't have as many online readers, but more people would be buying the actual newspaper.

I don't agree with this at all. I love reading things I can actually hold in my hands. The Register isn't dying because of the 'net. It is dying because of it's content, or lack thereof. the internet was a perfect storm for the industry, IMO.

Do you think that if there was no internet right now, but the content, agenda, etc. were the same, that the Register would be flourishing?

I think the Register would be doing better in the current climate if they produced a paper worth reading. Hard hitting, investigative, fair, etc.

I'd love to get the paper on a daily basis, and I don't read it on the internet at all. But I am not going to financially support an agenda filled publication.

Remember when they used to have the all-out MLB standings with a lot of categories, all the pitching matchups? Now it's like Wins, losses and percentage.

+1

that was the only reason I ever considered subscribing. when they dropped that it made the decision easy.
