Good afternoon, y'all.

A friend of mine is going to Des Moines for a business trip. I've only been there a handful of times, and the last was maybe 7 years ago. The only restaurant I remember is the Hessen House. My memory of it was that they had a fantastic beer selection...which precludes me from remembering anything about their food. Ahem.

Do you have any suggestions for some good eats in Des Moines?

Thanks!

Really depends on what you want. There are a lot of good options for all types and budgets. And many are locally owned instead of chain-restaurants.

OP...more details would be very helpful. Certain part of metro/downtown? Unique to Des Moines? Casual, urban, type of food, etc. etc.

Not knowing anything else, I'll throw out these to chew on (pun intended):

Centro - mid-priced, urban, large portions, can be casual-to-not-so-much
Court Ave Brewery - nice atmosphere, local micro-brew, heart of entertainment district
Zombie Burger - best, most unique burgers and alcohol infused shakes you'll find anywhere - caution: hard to find times when this place isn't VERY busy. Very casual.
Woody's Smoke Shack - great BBQ, very casual order at the counter, majority of seating is outside, free awesome corn bread!

Can be a lot more helpful with more details on what you're looking for.

Low Budget but really good food:
Nicks
Henry J's
Smokey D's
Jethros
Shortys

Good atmospheres and beers:

Hessen Haus
Centro
Django
Sam and Gabes
Massoti's

If your buddies like endless beer options and decent food I would take them to High Life/El Bait Shop. You really wont go wrong with any of the suggestions people have posted. Besides Cactus Bobs, IMO there is farrr better bbq.
