Has something changed in our schemes this year? It seems like the defense is giving up at least 2 huge passing plays a game in OU OSU TX and now Kansas games . Is it personnel or are we just in the wrong defense at the wrong time.

KSU qb is no slouch. he will torch us on sat if the back 4 has a game like last week

any thoughts?

IMO it's personnel. We have good run support safeties but not that good against the deep threat.

Our secondary, especially against the pass, is probably the weakest unit on the team outside of kicker. Not much more to it than that.

I would say KU's success with the deep ball was good play-calling. After Pooka Williams was doing so well on the ground, we had to adjust which opened up the deep throws. They just made the right calls at the right times. Fortunately, they couldn't do it in the red zone in the first half.

I agree. I think we have to keep K-State from going balls deep on us.

Getting behind the secondary, or deep balls? Many big plays were more poor tackling and angles than it was deep balls imo. For example, two of the Ok St TDs.

On the Williams TD last week, that’s a back out of the backfield burning a slower safety that had been coming up for run support.

I think there's talent there but lack of experience has hurt.

There's going to be a drop off when parts of the backend were able to hold Will Greier to 100 yards.

We don't seem to give up many real "deep throws", it's primarily mid-level throws that extend beyond the catch due to poor tackling, poor pursuit angles/positioning, etc. Those are primarily issues of talent/personnel than scheme.

Inexperienced DBs, injured safeties, and some marginal DL and LBer play lead to giving up big plays. Listen to Jeff Woody's podcast and then rewatch the game. You can see that the LBers were trying to fill inside because the DL was getting pushed around in the middle. Williams did a great job of bouncing a couple carries to the outside, and the safety did not respond quick enough. Lewis had a tough game and got sucked in to try and help in the running game. Him matched up on Williams is always going to be a bad deal. The fact that officials absolutely refused to call holding on KU really help them a lot Saturday. It was pretty bad.

I suspect that Elsworth is about 65-75%, and Lewis is also still injured, but playing. Generally I would blame a lot of the big plays given up against OSU and KS as poor fit by the LBers and safeties.

If the ISU DB and LBers could catch anything this team would probably undefeated right now. That is so frustrating.

At least for the KU game if you read Jeff Woody's article he kind of explains how when everyone isn't playing with intensity and doing their job then others have a tendency to try and fill in then they end up getting beat. Jeff explains it much better than I.

braxton lewis should not play anymore.

He had a rough day, for sure. Try to remember, he is one of the guys that actually catches interceptions when other teams throw the ball at him. He could be faster, but he is still a lot better than the kid from Rice.

disagree all you want but ku was picking on him. texas picked on him.

if you dont think hes a problem I recommend going back and watching the games.

Pooka is a pro and causes a lot of problems for any defense. When he came full speed out of the backfield and blew by our LB or safety (can't recall which) I knew it was a TD as long as the QB didn't screw up the throw.

alright what's your solution.. Playing his back up that's so much better? Changing the entire defensive scheme?
