Decision Time on Jackson

Could we do better? sure, somewhere out there is a Fred Hoiberg type coach that could take us right to the top. But we don't know who he is and it would be a gamble that we'd end up worse off. Could we make a safe move and go with the Paulsens? Yeah, we probably could. I doubt anyone would complain much. I know I wouldn't.

But some people continue to post like Jackson is some terrible program destroyer instead of an average to above average coach who, as a whole, has improved the wrestling program from year to year over the essentially dead program that Sanderson left behind after the 2009 senior class. Could he be better? Yes, he could. Could he be worse? Yes, we could do much, much worse than Jackson.

And even Hoiberg is sitting at home while Fran is still prepping for a game!

That's because he's the guy in charge. It is decidedly his program. The buck starts and stops with him. I have expressed my desire for him to get it done many times. I have even posted that I would like nothing better than for him to shut me up. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened. We are sliding down the standings, not moving up.

Who would rip on CWC wrestlers? Ripping a bunch of young guys making peanuts in order to win gold for the USA? That would take a special kind of stupidity. And volunteers? Get serious.
Special kinda stupid.......Quit posting and go away

The classic defend Iowa move from you, couldn't pull out a UNI one. Quit posting and go away

Uh, why don't you guys just put him on your "Ignore" list? Those of us who have wouldn't even see his posts if you don't reply to him. Obviously, he isn't going away, but you can do the next best thing.

You guys should not be so critical of NEIcyFan. He is at least consistent. Almost exactly a year ago, he started a post like this one, questioning KJ's future. Here is one of his entries:

"Please give me a break with the anti-KJ stuff. I've said since he signed the extension that I'm on board and looking for improvement. He's our guy for next year but doesn't have a contract beyond next season. It is only prudent at this point in time to discuss what needs to be done for him to receive another extension.

As for your question above, that's a relatively easy question to answer. ISU is one of the most storied and most well supported wrestling programs in the country. ISU is one of only a hand full of programs with a realistic shot of contending for a national title on a regular basis. The past 4 years we have finished: 20th, 35th, 11th and 12th. In the fifth year of this program we couldn't get into the top 10 and in the fifth year of this program we had 5(!) starters finish with sub-.500 records. Half the team had a losing record. Think about just how bad that is for just a second. You're telling me that in five years it is unrealistic to think we could find a wrestler at most every weight class who could produce a winning record?

This isn't football where it takes years to rebuild. Wrestling programs can/should be rebuilt rather quickly. Simply put, recruiting, retention and development do not approach elite levels.

If having higher expectations than what we are getting for program than what we're getting makes me a bad fan, so be it. We're Iowa State, for crying out loud. When I read comments from this thread and others that we should be content with the results we are getting it makes me think too many people have forgotten this. These kind of comments make me want to pull my hair out."

Does this entry sound familiar? A leopard never changes its spots.

Thumbs Up[/h] None...

lol well duh. Of course my opinion hasn't changed. We finished even further back at the NCAAs and now our best two wrestlers are graduating. Why would that improve my opinion of the program?

Last year I told him if he didn't go away I'd expose every post. Just a total crap move on what should have been a positive energy day for kyven. Now if we all just ignore every post he makes maybe he will quit posting and go away

Wonder how the team would feel about your positive vibe toward their accomplishments or improvement over the last 5 years. BTW, quit posting and go away

I would hope our team also wants to be contending and isn't content with 15th place finishes.

If not, our problems are even bigger than I imagined.

Just to be clear, in terms of national championship finishes, this is the worst 5yr stretch since at least the 1950s (according to Wikipedia anyway). The worst 4yr average prior to Jackson was 12th place towards then end of Bobby Douglas' tenure. There were actually no periods where ISU finished worse than 9th for 3 consecutive years. Five consecutive years of worse than 12th under Jackson seems pretty terrible IMO. So I don't know that there is a lot to lose by trying something different. Could it really be worse? Doesn't seem like it. I think this is about as bad as it can get for a school with Iowa State's resources/commitment and history in the sport.

Jesus! 7 Pages of bashing NEICy for a valid question. Who cares who posted it, KJ's track record speaks for itself. We are about to fall even further folks. The key cogs in the program the last 3 years were legacy wrestlers who were coming to ISU KJ or not. Last year's recruiting class was by far the best KJ's had and was ranked ~12.

Nice to wake up this morning and see that a few people actually get it. We are underscheiving as a program and the most positive comments even the most positive poster can come up is that we "won't likely slip further" next year.

I look at it like this: KJ was given a 2 year contract 2 years ago. Giving a coach 2 years is not common. To me, that's a message that you have two years to right the ship. Has this happened? We've actually finished further behind at the NCAAs each of the past 2 seasons.

And no matter what side you're on, anyone who doesn't understand the announcement of what they are doing with KJ is a big deal for this program is kidding themselves.

His recruiting is no where near elite level. Some good kids but not nearly enough of them. I don't understand people who say "we aren't getting anyone better." How could you possibly know this and what are you clinging to?

I would support any of the following realistic candidates to replace KJ. And probably others.

Damian Hahn - Cornell assistant. A huge reason for their success.
Cody Sanderson - Wants his own program at some point and will do it at a place where a title CAN be won. This would be a huge hire for ISU and my #1 candidate. I think the fans can forgive him for leaving with Cael. Not sure about JP.
Drew Pariano - Northwestern head coach. My number #2 candidate. Fantastic recruiter but will never be able to build enough depth at NU, with their limitations, to be a serious title contender. He won't have that problem in Ames.
Brandon Eggum - Minnesota assistant. Has to be wondering how much longer J is going to hang around. Is there a succession program in place?
Travis Paulson. From what I gather he's doing the majority of the coaching in the ISU room. Has his own ideas. Not one of my favorites but I would support the move and think we would be better off.
Eric Guerrero - See Eggum, though Smith has more years left than J.
Tim Flynn - Edinboro. Might be getting a little long in the tooth but maybe he hands over the reigns in a few years to a younger understudy like Paulson?
Mark Perry - Illinois. Yes, I said it.

These are the ones that I've been thinking of. Certainly there are more candidates. We have seen what we will get with KJ. None of these guys would make us worse off. I truly believe that.

Another name I would like to add to this list is Iowa native and Virginia Tech head coach Kevin Dresser.

It's not the question he asked, but if u don't know who he is then u have no reason making this comment. This guy along with a few others continue to bash the program any minute that something negative happens. But anytime that this team does anything good or great they are nowhere to be found. The va tech meet, we dominated a good team, Wisconsin we had 4 PINS! They made no comments of how good the team looked. So us fans that are very passionate about this program and this team, it's very annoying about the negativity that they always try to bring.

Damian Hahn - Cornell assistant. A huge reason for their success. Wont happen.
Cody Sanderson - Wants his own program at some point and will do it at a place where a title CAN be won. This would be a huge hire for ISU and my #1 candidate. I think the fans can forgive him for leaving with Cael. Not sure about JP. No
Drew Pariano - Northwestern head coach. My number #2 candidate. Fantastic recruiter but will never be able to build enough depth at NU, with their limitations, to be a serious title contender. He won't have that problem in Ames. Actually not horrible
Brandon Eggum - Minnesota assistant. Has to be wondering how much longer J is going to hang around. Is there a succession program in place? Taking over for Minny when J leaves
Travis Paulson. From what I gather he's doing the majority of the coaching in the ISU room. Has his own ideas. Not one of my favorites but I would support the move and think we would be better of. 1st choice
Eric Guerrero - See Eggum, though Smith has more years left than J. Don't think so
Tim Flynn - Edinboro. Might be getting a little long in the tooth but maybe he hands over the reigns in a few years to a younger understudy like Paulson? Nope
Mark Perry - Illinois. Yes, I said it. Good luck with that

Okay woke up pretty good this morning after that emotional WIN WIN WIN for Kyven oh and some Ice Cream to top it off. :spinny:

So I'll take this and try to push aside your past posts and have a "normal" convo. Here are my thoughts on the subject.

-JP is not going to be interested in looking for a new coach because 1) his health 2) wrestling is NOT a priority on his list. (this of course goes out the window unless it is from within.
-I highlighted my opionion on the ones your listed above so check that out
-Proud of Kyven. Proud of KJ for the emotions you can tell he had with Kyven.
-Think we could have done better this year but that's Matness for you hell look at WVU's 125lber. Just out of no where and actually if he could have landed that cement mixer bam champion.
-Someone earlier mentioned if a donor dropped a million if it would help.. YES YES YES heck even 1/2 million would go a long ways. You think about that, it is crazy because that "little" going to say football or other revenue sports wouldn't be anything but in wrestling it would be everything.
-Sad to see Big M go, disappointed tourney but was a great Clone and even better leader.
-Opinion on next year will be reserved for a later time.
