DCU (DC Universe) Thread

If you liked Man of Steel you would not like this so that makes sense.

I liked Man of Steel, but I do think it fundamentally got Superman wrong in a way this one gets it right. That said, this is not a perfect movie. Personally I could have used a lot less Crypto and a lot less proton river.

My caveat is that I love Nicholas Hoult. He might be my favorite actor. I thought his Lex, Lois, and Clark were all perfectly cast.
Agreed.

Gunn was clearly inspired by the original films, which were incredibly light hearted and goofy, but he managed to vastly improve his Lex Luthor making him a more compelling villain. Snyder was creating a Superman that would fit seamlessly into a world one step adjacent to a Nolan Batman. I think DC projects as a whole work better when the differences between Batman and Superman are more stark.

One of the core Superman themes is the message of hope. I never felt hope from Man of Steel.

I agree with you on it all. This movie is a hard left turn from Man of Steel that I have a hard time coming to terms with. The proton river sequence was completely stupid and while at times I was digging Crypto, they just used him way too much. I feel like Crypto is one of those characters where the less you use him the more effective he is when you do.

I agree with you both on the Hope thing, which is part of why I didn't like Batman vs Superman. To me, Man of Steel was the perfect setup to the hopeful Superman I think we were all wanting, but then Snyder instead did a hard right turn the complete opposite direction with Batman vs Superman. It was super frustrating for me. Then, due to how Batman vs Superman left Superman, we ended up only getting a miniscule glimpse of the Superman we were all wanting in Zack Snyder's Justice League, which was a movie I loved. However, even though I loved Zack Snyder's Justice League, his post credits scene didn't leave me optimistic again on that hopeful Henry Cavill Superman I waited all that time to see. Again, I'm very all over the board when it comes to Snyder's films and visions. I feel like I'm both a defender and heavy critic all at the same time.

Agreed. I think Cavill could have been an amazing Superman. Just never got there and I don’t blame him one bit.

I was more annoyed with this Lex than anything and kept thinking 'that's all they could come up with?' for some of the side humor/one liners.

For whatever reason I didn't feel all that interested in this or Thunderbolts. May need to watch again some time to see if they grow on me.

Has anyone been watching Peacemaker? I thought it was really good. Say what you want about Gunn, but he does well developing characters and adding humor. And just like guardians of the galaxy he does a great job of incorporating songs into the show. Surprisingly to me, Cena has been awesome. The whole cast is great actually. Kinda sad there are no plans for S3. Honestly, I’d pay to watch a feature film with these characters.

I have not gotten to it yet, but plan to. I've heard mixed reviews on the finale episode. What were your thoughts?

I thought it was great. Pretty easily the best DC tv I’ve seen. My only issue was that they ended with a cliffhanger and there are no plans for S3. Just that they’ll revisit the characters in movies. I feel like they are really short changing good characters that they’ve spent 2 seasons building by giving them a bit part in s larger superhero movie. I think this storyline is good enough on its own.

Peacemaker season 2 was phenomenal. Just the right amount of action and Gunn's humor. Episode 6 was a real standout. The ending wasn't a huge payoff like everyone was hoping for, but it did conclude everyone's character arcs.

I get the feeling the DCU story setup will continue in Man of Tomorrow and we will see many of the characters return in Waller.

I was lucky enough to be an extra in the finale of season 2. Any scene on the party boat, I'm in there.

I live about a 5-minute walk from where they filmed it, and they put out a local casting call for concert goers, so I figured why not. It was a fun experience, but I don't think I'll be making a regular side-gig out of acting.

(I'm not James Gunn, I added yellow arrows to point out where I'm at)
