McDermott's wife also had cancer with a pretty grim outlook at the time (she beat it thank God) so a lot of what he did in that off-season was financially motivated to make sure his family would be taken care of. He interviewed for K-State on his way back from Dayton after UNI lost in the tournament and had several others scheduled when the Iowa State offer was made.

It just didn't work. There was no malice or anything, Greg just wasn't quite ready at that point which every UNI fan could have told you at the time. In the end, it worked out for everybody (except UNI)...

I would go the money too........can't fault him for that. And it worked out alright for UNI. In fact so well people were questioning who was really behind Greg's good years at UNI. No, in the end the only place it didn't work was ISU. Thanks to everything that is good Fred came back and struck gold.

Hey Greg.

There wasn't a sane person in the ISU fan base or affiliated with the university that thought any of those guys would be around when Morgan got run. That's complete revisionist history.

And I remember the sideline incident in CF very well. It was 100% instigated by McDermott. He called Homan a gorilla after a hard but clean foul and Wayne was sticking up for our guys. i never understood why Morgan got so much flack for that while Chewey pretty much got a free pass.. That was one of the reasons I never liked McDermott getting the ISU job and I wouldn't blame Morgan at all for being pissed about the way the whole thing was handled. McDermott beat UNI once while he was here and he was almost in tears afterward because he felt bad for UNI. He never seemed like he wanted to he here to me, but he sure enjoyed cashing the checks.

I did a double take during his introductory speech when he said he was looking forward to beating Iowa some more since he was known for it at UNI.

Showed right there that he perhaps wasn't aware of what the program was about.

I wasn't clear. UNI losing Doug was a program changing moment that altered so much.

On good acord I was told Mac was not ready for the cesspool that is big boy D1 hoops. He inherited a program that at least a couple kids were either being paid or receiving benefits? These players went to Mac, Mac said no way. I see phrome in this same light. He's too nice to succeed at this level. I said it before a couple years ago against:

Iowa - players start mixing it up and he runs out on the court to try and make everyone feel better.

K ST - after big 12 tournament game same thing, CSP try's to make sure feelings aren't hurt. Went to bruce weber to explain and bruce pretty much said "whatever".

When CSP took over from hoiberg "I just don't want to mess it up", and let the players do thier own thing. He did not take control.

Maybe CSP will stay on as an assistant?

This view is far too biased towards McDermott. He was in season 4 and won 4 whole conference games. This despite having 3 guys who at least got a cup on NBA coffee. The final season roster was filled with upperclassmen. He didn't have a winning record a single season at ISU. ISU could have given him another 4 seasons and I don't think you'd see a meaningfully different result. Sometimes folks need a change of scenery.

Prohm is in season 6 and on pace to win 0 conference games.

Which was complete bs. I went to a few of their high school games that year and anyone with half a brain could see Doug was also a high level division 1 talent. The couple games I saw at Wells Fargo he looked like a better all around basketball player than Barnes, while Barnes had more athleticism.
Good god. The only skill of basketball where McDermott was better than Barnes was in stand still shooting.
Nothing else.

He was pandering to his audience. Nothing more.

Agree. Oats would be a grand slam hire. Call me crazy, but I actually think he would listen.

you could be right, but considering his success with Alabama's recruiting and success so far this season, I don't think he would see the ISU job as a better job. Willing to hear how others think it would be to an outsider.

To many wannabe basketball experts on hear just let things play out and take a break
You wanna hear basketball experts in this thread? Drake is 56th in KenPom this season, 12 spots above Mississippi State, the team we just lost to by 39 points. It took me awhile to find Iowa State, but we’re there, at 131st. Snugly between Wofford and Georgia State.

McDermott had the better all around game, hence why he was the national POY in college basketball. Barnes had more raw athletic ability.
Barnes was in the pros when McDermott won that honor.
Barnes was a better dribbler, rebounder, passer, defensive player (by leaps and bounds). But yeah, other than those small details...

I will agree with you that anyone who didn't see Doug as high level D-1 prospect either didn't understand what a D-1 prospect was, or was trying real hard not to. But in high school Harrison was the better player.

When people are talking about Oats they sound a little like Vol fan thinking they are going to get Campbell.
I think it is different because there is a bit of a personal connection to ISU. ISU fans raised money for his family when his wife got sick.

I don't think we could pull him off because he is in a good situation in Alabama, but I think he has more of a connection to ISU because of that and that is more than the lack of connection between Campbell and others programs. Oats is also from the Midwest, some people prefer the Midwest over other parts of the country. It's why I don't think we will ever see Campbell go to one of these blue bloods outside of the Midwest.

Again, I don't think we could get him, but I still think it is a call you try.

Drake plays Illinois State today at home, and they’re favored by almost 20 points. Would encourage any DeVries doubters in this thread to watch. Game starts at 2

I don't think anyone doubts he is a good coach........I think some doubt he would come to ISU.
