I agree his lack of experience at the head coaching level hurts him, but he was an assistant at Creighton for almost two decades. Prior to that, he started at UNI for four years, and presumably played basketball his entire life before that. He knows the sport of basketball. That’s probably the reason his son is the best high school basketball player in the state.

Then DeVries is apparently going to be turning down millions of dollars for at least the next five years, because McCaffrey will not be leaving Iowa any time soon. Or did you not notice our biggest rival has a top ten ranking with two of the coaches kids on the team?

Didn’t say it explained all four years- but it definitely impacted the first two years. Having that entire group return for the first year no doubt would have led to a better season and not needing to grab bodies to fill out a roster. End of day, maybe Mac wasn’t a good fit at ISU at the time. But he never got to coach the team he thought he would when he was introduced at his press conference. I know which group I would have wanted to coach.
I doubt there will be anything concrete while the season is still going on.
I’ve learned to never give the time of day to rumors about a coach’s supposed preferences. Gene Chizik was firmly entrenched in Ames. Fred Hoiberg was a hometown hero whose name hung in the rafters of the building he coached in. Bill Belicheck signed a contract to become the coach of the New York Jets before getting up and taking the Patriots job a week later. These guys never know what they want until it’s right in front of them.
Don’t think so- WM was fired on March 17- the Big 12 tourney had just ended. Mac was hired March 22- the hiring process was pretty quick. I think their decisions came later.

Guess I’m confused here- trying to find where I have said Mac was a perfect fit or that he was without fault in his four years at ISU. But imagine taking any job, coaching or any other profession, and not having all of the personnel (especially very talented, experienced personnel) or resources you thought you’d have when you signed on? And then it’s not there.
