I agree his lack of experience at the head coaching level hurts him, but he was an assistant at Creighton for almost two decades. Prior to that, he started at UNI for four years, and presumably played basketball his entire life before that. He knows the sport of basketball. That’s probably the reason his son is the best high school basketball player in the state.I only say that as a point of comparison knowing that he's getting a relatively-small salary from Drake, compared to the likes of Oats and Otz already being 7 digits a year, right now. Their floors are higher by default. That said, Smith is only slightly above DeVries, so they're similar in-that regard. DeVries arguably has the least high level coaching experience/most to prove at big-time level as well, from a HC perspective.
