I only say that as a point of comparison knowing that he's getting a relatively-small salary from Drake, compared to the likes of Oats and Otz already being 7 digits a year, right now. Their floors are higher by default. That said, Smith is only slightly above DeVries, so they're similar in-that regard. DeVries arguably has the least high level coaching experience/most to prove at big-time level as well, from a HC perspective.
I agree his lack of experience at the head coaching level hurts him, but he was an assistant at Creighton for almost two decades. Prior to that, he started at UNI for four years, and presumably played basketball his entire life before that. He knows the sport of basketball. That’s probably the reason his son is the best high school basketball player in the state.

form a major Drake donor last spring.
Then DeVries is apparently going to be turning down millions of dollars for at least the next five years, because McCaffrey will not be leaving Iowa any time soon. Or did you not notice our biggest rival has a top ten ranking with two of the coaches kids on the team?

Also if this was meant to indicate that he’s a huge Hawk fan that would never coach us, I’d like to point out that he was the starting point guard at his current job’s biggest rival.

hey man, it didn't come from me, I heard it last spring. He wants to be at Drake, he really does. Sure things can change, just telling you what I heard form a big donor whose family has had season tickets since 1965.

This view is far too biased towards McDermott. He was in season 4 and won 4 whole conference games. This despite having 3 guys who at least got a cup on NBA coffee. The final season roster was filled with upperclassmen. He didn't have a winning record a single season at ISU. ISU could have given him another 4 seasons and I don't think you'd see a meaningfully different result. Sometimes folks need a change of scenery.
Didn’t say it explained all four years- but it definitely impacted the first two years. Having that entire group return for the first year no doubt would have led to a better season and not needing to grab bodies to fill out a roster. End of day, maybe Mac wasn’t a good fit at ISU at the time. But he never got to coach the team he thought he would when he was introduced at his press conference. I know which group I would have wanted to coach.

He did chase off two of the most promising of his early players in Wesley Johnson and Mike Taylor though. Some of these wounds were self inflicted.

I’ve learned to never give the time of day to rumors about a coach’s supposed preferences. Gene Chizik was firmly entrenched in Ames. Fred Hoiberg was a hometown hero whose name hung in the rafters of the building he coached in. Bill Belicheck signed a contract to become the coach of the New York Jets before getting up and taking the Patriots job a week later. These guys never know what they want until it’s right in front of them.

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that Stinson and Blalock declared for the draft before WM was fired.
Don’t think so- WM was fired on March 17- the Big 12 tourney had just ended. Mac was hired March 22- the hiring process was pretty quick. I think their decisions came later.

Nope, before Morgan was fired. AP is saying March 15th.

Guess I’m confused here- trying to find where I have said Mac was a perfect fit or that he was without fault in his four years at ISU. But imagine taking any job, coaching or any other profession, and not having all of the personnel (especially very talented, experienced personnel) or resources you thought you’d have when you signed on? And then it’s not there.

And I’d argue that Mike Taylor’s dismissal was Mike Taylor inflicted.
